Student answer (Band 6.5)

The graph illustrates the number of participants taking part in different activities at one social centre based in Melbourne, Australia for 20 years from 2000 to 2020.

Overall, the film club was the most popular activity throughout the given period, while the musical performances was the least favorable from the beginning but it gained some participants overtime. One of the most important trend the graph shows is the crossover between the amateur dramatics and the table tennis that illustrates the table tennis overtaking the amateur dramatics.

From 2000 film club had a leading position. In 2010 the graph shows slight decrease but it quickly continued to rise ending up with nearly 70 participants. On the contrary, musical performances did not even had any participants from 2000 until 2005 when it suddenly surged and peaked in 2020 at around 20. The martial arts was the second most popular activity after the film club, however its numbers fluctuated time to time and after reaching its peak in 2010 at around 40, the numbers slightly declined.

The amateur dramatics was the third leading activity in 2000 at around 20.6, however, in 2005 it experienced a sharp decline and ended up on the last place. The amateur dramatics was followed by the table tennis, which overtook the amateur dramatics in 2010 and surged drastically in the following years reaching over 50 participants in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response identifies the main overall patterns: the film club remains the largest activity, table tennis rises markedly, and amateur dramatics declines. It also reports useful comparisons and approximate figures, such as table tennis reaching over 50 by 2020. These features support a clear summary of the graph. However, some details are inaccurate or imprecise: amateur dramatics did not experience a sharp decline in 2005 (it rose slightly from about 26 to 28), and table tennis overtook it between 2005 and 2010, not in 2010 itself. The claim that musical performances “peaked” in 2020 is also less informative than noting its steady rise after starting at zero. More precise reporting of these stages would strengthen an otherwise well-focused response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear four-part structure, moving from an introduction and overview to details about the activities. The overview highlights the film club’s sustained lead and the contrasting trends in table tennis and amateur dramatics, while the final paragraph groups those two activities for comparison. This gives the reader a generally logical progression. Some linking is less effective, however: “The amateur dramatics was followed by the table tennis” is unclear because it does not explain the relationship between the series, and “On the contrary” does not express a precise contrast between the film club and musical performances. The repeated use of “however” also makes cohesion somewhat mechanical. More exact transitions and clearer references would make the organisation smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

There is an adequate range of vocabulary for describing trends and comparisons, including “fluctuated,” “surged,” “overtaking,” and “leading position.” These choices help communicate the broad movements in the graph. Some collocations and word choices are less natural or precise: “gained some participants overtime,” “the least favorable,” and “continued to rise” do not always describe the data accurately or idiomatically. “Sharp decline” is also an unsuitable description of the small increase in amateur dramatics from 2000 to 2005. The response shows attempts to use less common trend language, but greater control of collocation and more exact verbs would improve precision and flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “while,” “but,” and “however,” and most meanings remain clear. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly with agreement and verb forms: “the musical performances was” should be “musical performances were,” and “did not even had” should be “did not even have.” There are also problems with articles and sentence construction in “One of the most important trend” and “From 2000 film club had a leading position.” The final sentence is long and awkwardly joined, which reduces control of punctuation and structure. More careful checking of agreement, auxiliaries, and sentence boundaries would make the varied structures more accurate.
