Student answer (Band 7.0)
The given line graph illustrates the numbers of people taking part in several activities at a social centre in Melbourne, Australia during two decades from 2000 to 2020.
Overall, the number of participants showed an increasing trend in all categories of activities except amateur dramatics which kept on declining after 2005.
First of all, the number of people taking part in the film club remained highest as 65 among all categories throughout the duration. Similarly, the members of martial arts remained almost consistent as more than 35 during the mentioned decades.
However, the category of table tennis depicted a potential rise and number of players increased from 15 in 2000 to more than 50 in 2020. Additionally, musical performers started performing in 2005 and kept on rising to 15 in 2020. Nevertheless, amateur dramatics showed a signficant fall. Its number of participants remained same as 25 till 2005 and then reduced to less than 10 in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response identifies the main patterns: film club participation stays highest, table tennis rises sharply, and amateur dramatics declines. It also gives a clear overall summary and supports it with figures such as table tennis increasing from 15 to over 50 and dramatics falling below 10. However, the overview over-generalises by saying all activities except amateur dramatics increased; martial arts fluctuated around a similar level rather than showing a sustained rise. The musical performances description also misstates the start year: participation was already recorded at zero in 2000 and first rose in 2010, not 2005. More precise reporting of these distinctions, alongside the key changes across the period, would make the account more fully supported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised clearly, moving from an introduction and overview to comparisons of the activities. Paragraphing helps distinguish the general picture from supporting details, and linking expressions such as “However,” “Additionally,” and “Nevertheless” guide the reader through contrasts. The progression is generally logical, with related categories grouped together. Some connections could be more precise: “First of all” introduces the film club and martial arts, but the relationship between these two stable series is not explicitly explained, while “However” signals a contrast that could be developed more clearly. A more systematic grouping—stable activities, rising activities, and the declining series—would make the comparisons even easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The response uses a sufficient range of task-related vocabulary, including “participants,” “remained,” “declining,” “increased,” and “significant fall,” and the meaning is clear throughout. There is some flexibility in describing trends, but several choices are imprecise or unnatural for a graph report. “Potential rise” is not the most suitable phrase for a clear upward trend, and “started performing” describes people rather than the participation figures. “Remained highest as 65” is also an awkward collocation, while “signficant” is misspelled. These issues do not prevent understanding, but more accurate collocations and careful spelling would strengthen the report’s precision and style.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
There is a useful mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the relative clause in “amateur dramatics which kept on declining” and the contrast introduced by “However.” Most sentences are easy to understand, and punctuation is generally controlled. A few grammatical patterns are less accurate or natural: “remained highest as 65” needs a different construction, such as “stood at about 65 and remained the highest”; “remained same as 25” is missing an article; and “the number of people … increased” would be more consistent than shifting between the number and the people as the subject. The sentence structures are generally sound, but refining these patterns would improve accuracy while retaining the range already shown.
