Student answer (Band 5.0)
The line graph illustrates the trend and give information on the number of participants for different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia for the period 2000 to 2020
Overall, a rapid surge is observed in year 2010 in table tennis activites and marked a peaked in year 2020. Also there is an overlaping between trends in amateur dramatics and table tennis in year 2010.
Firstly, there is a noteable finding in film club trends which reports higher number of participants in year 2000 till year 2010. Moreover, there is a rapid downtrend in amateur dramatics and people started lose intrest in 2010 and there were only less than 10 individuals remained till 2020.
Additionally, a little fluctuation was seen in martial arts activities, and somehow same numbers of participants were reported from 2000 to 2020. So, we can say there were same people who were intrested for martial arts

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response identifies several relevant features, including the film club’s high participation, the decline in amateur dramatics, and the relative stability of martial arts. However, the overview is inaccurate: table tennis did not surge in 2010 or peak in 2020; its sharp rise occurred after 2010, reaching about 54 by 2020. The claimed overlap between amateur dramatics and table tennis in 2010 is also incorrect, as their figures were about 20 and 20, respectively, so they were equal rather than showing an overlap in trends. Musical performances, which rose from zero to around 18, are omitted. The response is 133 words, below the 150-word minimum, and several key comparisons are under-reported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic structure, with an opening, an overview, and paragraphs introduced by “Firstly” and “Additionally.” These markers help signal separate points, and the reader can generally follow the activities being discussed. However, progression is limited: the overview repeats or misstates details rather than summarising the main patterns, and the discussion moves between activities without a clear comparison of their changes over time. The final sentence, “So, we can say there were same people,” does not follow logically from the small fluctuations in participant numbers. Use a clearer overview, group activities with similar trends, and connect comparisons explicitly rather than relying mainly on sequencing words.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
There is some relevant range for describing a graph, including “rapid surge,” “downtrend,” “fluctuation,” and “participants.” These choices show an attempt to use trend vocabulary rather than only basic terms. However, several expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “marked a peaked,” “higher number … from year 2000 till year 2010,” and “same people who were interested.” Spelling errors, including “activites,” “overlaping,” “noteable,” and “intrested,” are noticeable. Some word choices also obscure the intended trend: “surge” is attached to the wrong year, while “downtrend” could be replaced with a more precise description of the steady decline. Aim for accurate collocations and check spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts a mixture of simple statements and longer sentences, using links such as “Moreover” and “Additionally.” However, control is inconsistent, and errors occur in basic sentence construction as well as more complex attempts. For example, “The line graph illustrates the trend and give information” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “people started lose interest” is missing “to.” The overview fragment “Also there is an overlapping…” is awkwardly joined to the preceding sentence, and “there were same people” lacks an article and does not express the intended meaning clearly. Tense and article use also need attention. Practise forming complete, accurate sentences before adding more complex structures, and proofread agreement and verb patterns.
