Student answer (Band 5.5)

The line graph outlines the number of players for five different activities at single social platform in Melbourne, Australia over two decades.

Overall,it can be seen that all the activities have some kind of increase with some fluctuation except amateur dramatics, that faced a steep fall.

The only activity in the list that came in the competition was Musical performances. It started at 2005 with zero number of participant and rose gradually up to roughly17 in the year 2020 without experiencing any downfall. After that, In year 2000 table tanis was a bit fimiliar in people with the players of about 17 and for the first 10 years it didnot experience sharp increase but a samll decline but in the year 2010 ,suddenly it experience an sharp upward trajactory to reach more than 50 members.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main contrast between the strong rise in table tennis and the steep decline in amateur dramatics, and you mention the film club’s slight dip and recovery. These are relevant features, and the response gives a general overview. However, the overview says that all activities increased, which is not accurate for amateur dramatics and understates the broadly stable pattern in martial arts. Some details are also unclear or inaccurate: musical performances began in 2000, not 2005, and table tennis rose sharply after 2010 rather than suddenly in 2010. The film club and martial arts trends receive only brief treatment. A more precise overview and clearer comparisons across the period would make the report more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has an overall structure, moving from an introduction and overview to descriptions of individual activities. Paragraphing helps separate the main trends, and phrases such as “In contrast” signal a comparison. However, progression within the body is difficult to follow because several activities and time periods are packed into long sentences. For example, the passage beginning “After that” shifts from musical performances to table tennis without a clear transition, and “Lastly” introduces the film club only at the end. Linking expressions are sometimes awkward or repetitive, while punctuation around sentence openings is inconsistent. Grouping the rising, falling and relatively stable activities into clearer sections would improve the logical flow and make comparisons easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You attempt a range of trend vocabulary, including “steep fall,” “dramatic downfall,” “upward trajectory” and “fluctuation,” which is appropriate for describing a line graph. However, spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural collocations are noticeable and sometimes make the reader pause: “table tanis,” “fimiliar,” “samll,” “flauctuation” and “a little above than” are examples. Some choices are also unsuitable for this context: “players” and “competition” do not accurately describe participants and activities at a social centre. Repeated use of “members” and “activity” limits precision. Check spelling carefully and choose standard graph-reporting phrases, such as “the number of participants rose” or “remained broadly stable.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple statements and attempts at more complex sentences, including clauses with “although” or “that,” and the main trends are generally understandable. However, some sentence structures are faulty or difficult to control. For instance, “Overall,it can be seen that all the activities have some kind of increase” has punctuation and tense problems, while “it started at 2005” uses an incorrect preposition and “it experience an sharp upward” has errors in verb form and article use. There are also inconsistent tense choices when describing past data, and several sentences run on without clear punctuation. Use the past simple consistently, check subject–verb agreement and articles, and divide long sentences into shorter, complete units.
