IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graph below gives information on the numbers of participants for different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia for the period 2000 to 2020.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The line graph compares the number of participants among five different activities at one social organisation between 2000 and 2020 in Melbourne, Australia.
Overall, an upward trend was noticed in activities like table tennis and musical performances, while amateur dramatics significantly decreased. However, film club and martial arts-type activities remained relatively stable over the period.
At the start of the line graph, musical performance was the least-joined activity and table tennis stood in third place in 2000, with no participants and above 15 participants. Both activities' participation rates gradually increased to 10 and 20 participants in 2010, before they faced a dramatic rise to above 15 and below 60 participants between 2010 and 2020. In contrast, amateur dramatics rose from above 25 to 30 participants from 2000 to 2005, and faced a significant fall over the period.
Compared with others, members of the film club were at their peak, with almost 65 participants in 2000. It remained constant, though it faced some fluctuations. Following the film club, participants in martial arts remained the same. Although there were some rises and falls in the graph, the film club was the most popular activity among the participants.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the main broad patterns: table tennis and musical performances rise, amateur dramatics declines, and film club remains the most popular. However, several details are inaccurate or too vague to give a sufficiently clear account. For example, table tennis rises sharply after 2010 to about 54 participants, not “below 60” after a “dramatic rise” that is grouped with musical performances; musical performances reach only about 18. The film club also fluctuates slightly rather than simply remaining constant, while martial arts varies around the mid-30s rather than staying the same. You mention the decline in amateur dramatics but do not report its endpoint. More precise comparisons and key figures would make the summary more complete and better supported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview and two detail paragraphs, and the broad progression from general trends to individual activities is understandable. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “In contrast,” and “Compared with others” help signal relationships. However, some sequencing and references are unclear: “Both activities’ participation rates” refers to musical performances and table tennis, but the following figures and time periods are difficult to match to each series. The phrase “above 15 and below 60” further obscures which activity reached which level. The final paragraph repeats that film club was most popular without adding much comparison. Grouping the rising series together with clearly matched figures, then contrasting them with the declining and stable series, would improve progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing trends, including “upward trend,” “significantly decreased,” “fluctuations,” and “remained relatively stable.” These choices make the main patterns clear, and you attempt some less common phrasing. At times, however, word choice or collocation is imprecise: “least-joined activity” is not a natural way to describe participation, and “faced a dramatic rise” is awkward for a figure increasing. “Martial arts-type activities” also introduces an unnecessary qualification, since the chart names martial arts directly. Repeated use of “participants” and “remained” limits variety somewhat. Prefer precise chart language such as “had the fewest participants,” “rose sharply,” and “the number of participants fluctuated.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including contrast clauses beginning “while” and “Although,” and most of the meaning remains clear. Some grammatical errors and awkward constructions persist. In “Following the film club, participants in martial arts remained the same,” the subject does not fit the intended comparison; the number of participants should be the subject. “Although there were some rises and falls in the graph” is also an imprecise construction, and the extra space in “there were” is a punctuation/typing slip. In “It remained constant,” the pronoun’s reference is not fully clear. Use explicit subjects such as “The film club’s figure…” and “Martial arts participation…” to improve accuracy and clarity while retaining varied sentence structures.
