Student answer (Band 6.5)

The line graph compared the data of members involved in five different activities at a social center in Melbourne, Australia between 2000 and 2020.

Overall, the graph highlighted that the most attendees are interested in a film club over the years followed by a significant increase in the number of participants in table tennis and musical performances. However, the participation in amateur dramatics decreased sharply.

The data showed that the film club is the most attended activity with around 70 participants in 2020. The number of members in table tennis increased sharply from less than 20 in 2000 to around 60 in 2020. Furthermore, the participants in musical performance also rose steadily from zero to around 20 in 2020.

In addition to that, martial arts participation showed fluctuating trends over the years. However, the number of participants in amateur dramtics declined sharply from around 30 in 2000 to less than 10 in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main overall patterns: film club remains the most popular, table tennis and musical performances rise, and amateur dramatics declines. The figures you give are broadly consistent with the chart, including table tennis rising from below 20 to around 60 and amateur dramatics falling to below 10. However, some details are imprecise: film club reaches about 66, rather than around 70, and martial arts is described only as fluctuating, without reporting its fairly stable range of roughly 32–38. The overview also says musical performances increased significantly, although its rise is more moderate than table tennis’s. To strengthen the response, compare the series more precisely and include key intermediate values or turning points, especially for martial arts and table tennis.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs reporting details. The main trends are easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Furthermore,” and “In addition to that” help signal relationships between points. This gives the report coherent progression. To move further, make the grouping of details more deliberate and avoid using “However” to introduce martial arts after a sentence that does not establish a contrasting point. The final paragraph also combines two series without much development. A clearer comparison—for example, contrasting the steady martial-arts range with the sharp divergence between table tennis and amateur dramatics—would improve progression and make connections less dependent on formulaic transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “participants,” “increased sharply,” “rose steadily,” “fluctuating trends,” and “declined sharply.” These choices communicate the main movements clearly. Some wording is less precise or natural for describing a graph: “compared the data of members” is awkward, and “the most attendees are interested in” does not accurately express the number participating. There is also a spelling error in “dramtics,” and “musical performance” would be more consistent with the chart’s activity label in the plural. Aim for precise collocations and avoid implying interest when the graph reports participation. For example, use “the number of participants” and “had the highest participation” to describe the data directly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and most sentences are understandable. The overview sentence beginning “Overall” combines several trends effectively, while the later sentences use clear comparative structures such as “from…to…”. Some grammatical errors remain. In “the most attendees are interested,” the subject and construction are awkward; “the highest number of participants was in the film club” would be clearer. Tense is also inconsistent: the introduction uses past tense (“compared”), but the report shifts to present (“is,” “increased,” “declined”). Choose a consistent tense, usually past for a completed period. Check articles and number agreement as well, such as “musical performances” when referring to the activity shown.
