Student answer (Band 7.0)
The line chart provides information about the participant figures for various activities in one of the social centre in Melbourne, Australia from 2000 to 2020.
Overall, the film club was consistently one of the most popular activities throughout the period. In contrast, the amateur dramatics experienced a signficant decline by 2020. Meanwhile, the table tennis and musical performances recorded substantial growth at the end of the period, while martial arts fluctuated slightly over a period of two decades.
In 2000, the number of people who took part in film club activity were around 64, the figure slightly dipped in 2010, before reaching around 65 by 2020. While attendees in the amateur dramatics stood at approximately 27 initially and then slightly rose to around 29 in 2005 before plunging to roughly around 6 by the end of the period.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response identifies the main patterns clearly: film club remains among the most popular, amateur dramatics declines markedly, table tennis rises strongly, and martial arts fluctuates. It also supports these points with relevant figures, such as table tennis increasing from about 16 to 53 and amateur dramatics falling to around 6. The overview is effective, and the account covers all five activities. A few details are imprecise: film club dips to about 60 in 2010, rather than merely dipping without a figure, and martial arts ends at roughly 36, not 33. Musical performances begin at zero in 2000 as well as 2005, so the starting point could be stated more accurately. More precise reporting of these details would strengthen an otherwise well-selected summary.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised in a clear progression: an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs grouping the trends. Contrast markers such as “In contrast,” “By contrast,” and “Similarly” help readers follow comparisons, while the chronological descriptions are generally easy to track. The grouping of film club and amateur dramatics, followed by table tennis, musical performances, and martial arts, is logical. Some linking is slightly awkward or repetitive, particularly “By contrast” after the previous paragraph has already established contrasts, and “whereas” is used after a comma in a way that makes the final comparison less smooth. More varied, precise transitions and tighter sentence connections would make the cohesion feel more natural, while preserving the strong overall progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
There is a good range of vocabulary for describing trends, including “fluctuated,” “plunging,” “levelled off,” and “soared,” and these choices generally communicate the chart’s movements effectively. The response also uses comparison language such as “second highest activity.” Some collocations and word forms are less natural: “participant figures” and “attendees figure” are awkward, while “the amateur dramatics” and “the musical performance” do not match the activity labels smoothly. “Signficant” is misspelled, and “minimally increased” is an unusual choice for a modest rise. Aim for accurate, natural combinations such as “number of participants,” “participation in amateur dramatics,” and “rose slightly.” This would make the vocabulary more precise and consistently appropriate to an academic summary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The response uses a range of sentence forms, including complex comparisons and time clauses, and many sentences are clear and grammatically controlled. For example, the overview contrasts several trends effectively, and the table-tennis description combines a starting figure with later changes. A few errors remain in agreement and sentence construction. In “the number of people … were around 64,” the singular subject requires “was”; “one of the social centre” needs a plural noun; and “While attendees … stood at …” is a dependent clause left without a complete main clause. The final sentence also has awkward punctuation around “whereas.” Review subject–verb agreement, articles and clause boundaries, especially when beginning a sentence with “while.”
