Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response gives a clear overview of the main patterns: the film club remained the most popular, table tennis rose markedly, and amateur dramatics declined. It also reports the musical performances’ emergence and the broadly stable, fluctuating pattern for martial arts. Most figures are accurately selected, including the film club’s fall to 60 before recovery and table tennis’s rise to 54. The final amateur dramatics figure is given as 7 rather than approximately 6, a small discrepancy that does not alter the trend. To strengthen the report further, make comparisons between activities more explicit—for example, noting that table tennis overtook martial arts by 2015 and became the second-largest activity by 2020. Overall, the key features are covered and supported with relevant data.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The information is generally presented in a sensible order: an introduction and overview are followed by details about the activities, with contrast markers such as “In contrast,” “By contrast,” and “Finally.” This helps the reader follow the main trends. However, the response is written as one continuous paragraph, so the overview and supporting details are not visually separated. Some transitions are also awkward or inconsistently punctuated, such as “After that,it rose sharply” and “However, the figure rose.” Grouping the overview into its own paragraph and organising the detailed comparisons into one or two further paragraphs would make the progression clearer. Use linking expressions selectively and ensure punctuation and spacing support the connections between sentences.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The response uses an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “fluctuated,” “declined steadily,” “rose sharply,” and “remained unchanged.” These choices communicate the main trends clearly, and “most popular” is an effective summary of the film club’s position. There are, however, several spelling errors, including “participlants,” “Austraila,” “drametics,” and “appproimately,” which reduce accuracy. Some phrasing is also repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “the figure” and “the number.” Aim for more precise alternatives such as “participation,” “attendance,” or “the total,” while checking spelling carefully. Greater variety in describing changes and comparisons would make the vocabulary more flexible and polished.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response attempts a mix of sentence forms, including a complex overview sentence with “while” and contrast clauses using “though” and “but.” Most trends remain understandable, and the past tense is generally appropriate for the period shown. However, punctuation and sentence boundaries are not consistently controlled: for example, “In 2000 around 64 people participated in the film club,This figure…” joins two sentences with a comma, while “However” is incorrectly attached after a comma in “2005, However, the figure…”. Missing spaces after punctuation also interrupt the flow. There are some errors in capitalisation, such as beginning “table tennis” with a lowercase letter after a full stop. Use full stops or semicolons to separate complete clauses, and proofread sentence boundaries and punctuation.
