Student answer (Band 5.0)
The bar chart compares information on the numbers of participants for different activities at one social centre in melbourne, australia for the time period from 2000 to 2020.
Overall, the graph depicts activities like film club, table tennis and many other forms. Some had a rise and some declined.
So the film club had high participating numbers from 2000 and this trend followed till 2020 whereas table tennis was initially low in participants but when years passed by the numbers had a significant rise from approximately 15 to around 55, the numbers grew rapidly whereas martial arts did not have much increase or decrease, sometimes the numbers fell and and in few years it got a rise.
As amateur dramatics were low as compared to other activities as they were initially in a good number but as the years passed by it fell rapidly and the number of participants were just 5 by 2020. However musical performances were not at all good in first few years and by 2010 the participants were 10 and by 2020 the numbers were not great.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the main activities and report several relevant trends, including the film club’s consistently high participation, table tennis’s sharp rise, and amateur dramatics’ decline to about five or six participants. These observations show a reasonable grasp of the chart. However, the overview is vague (“Some had a rise and some declined”), and some comparisons are incomplete: musical performances rose from zero to around 18, so describing the final numbers as “not great” does not clearly report the trend. The film club also dipped slightly before increasing, rather than simply maintaining an unchanged trend. To strengthen the response, give a concise overview of the most important contrasts and support it with accurate figures at key points.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response has a basic overall structure: an introduction, a brief overview, and further discussion of the activities. The reader can generally follow the sequence, and words such as “Overall,” “whereas,” and “However” attempt to connect ideas. However, progression is weakened by long, crowded sentences that combine several series, especially the sentence beginning “So the film club…” The final paragraph also shifts between amateur dramatics and musical performances without a clear comparison. Some linking is repetitive or imprecise, and the overview does not clearly guide the details that follow. Use separate paragraphs for the overview and grouped trends, and organise the body around contrasting patterns, with one or two clear comparisons in each paragraph.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use enough topic vocabulary to communicate the general subject, including “participants,” “significant rise,” “declined,” and “rapidly.” These choices help convey broad movement in the figures. However, the range is limited and several expressions are vague or unnatural for describing data. “High participating numbers” and “not at all good” do not precisely describe participation, while “the numbers were not great” gives an unsupported judgement rather than a neutral report. Repetition of “numbers” and “participants” also makes the account less flexible. Aim for precise trend language and natural collocations, such as “participation remained high,” “rose sharply,” and “reached approximately 18.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt some longer sentences and use contrast clauses, for example “whereas table tennis was initially low…” This shows an effort to vary sentence structure, and the main message is usually understandable. However, complex sentences are often poorly controlled: the sentence beginning “So the film club…” runs several ideas together, and “sometimes the numbers fell and and in few years it got a rise” contains faulty coordination and article use. There are also agreement and tense problems, as in “the number of participants were just 5,” and punctuation is insufficient in places. Build accuracy by separating long sentences, checking singular/plural agreement, and using consistent past-tense forms to describe the completed period.
