Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given graph illustrates the number of participants for different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia. It is for the period 2000 to 2020. The X-axis shows the Year and Y-axis shows the number of participants.

The highest number of participants were in the Film club throughout this time period with atleast 60 people participating every year. The Martial arts department has seen a zig-zag curve over the years with the year 2010 having the highest number of participants at 40.

The number of people participating in Amateur dramatics has seen the biggest fall over the years. It started with about 25 people in the year 2000 and ended up with less than 10 people in 2020.On the other hand, the number of people playing Table tennis has seen a dramatic rise with around 15 people in 2000 to more than 50 in 2020. The last decade saw the biggest increase in this sport.

There were no musical performances from 2000 to 2005 and then it saw a steady rise with each passing year ending with around 20 participants in 2020.

Overall, it is clear from the graph that film club is the most loved activity at the social centre with table tennis becoming the new favourite and not many people are interested in musical performances.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main patterns and make relevant comparisons: film club remains the largest activity, amateur dramatics declines markedly, table tennis rises sharply, and musical performances begin later. Most figures are broadly consistent with the graph. However, the overview is not fully accurate when it calls film club the “most loved” activity and table tennis a “new favourite”; the chart shows participation, not preferences, and table tennis remains below film club in 2020. The claim that musical performances attract “not many people” is also an interpretation rather than a clear comparison. Some details could be more precise: martial arts peaks at about 38 in 2010, while table tennis rises especially strongly from 2010 to 2020. A more objective, data-focused overview would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response is arranged in a generally clear sequence: an introduction, discussion of the leading activities, contrasting trends, and a concluding overview. Phrases such as “On the other hand” help signal a contrast between falling amateur dramatics and rising table tennis. However, the organisation is somewhat list-like, with activities discussed one after another rather than grouped consistently by similar trends. The final paragraph also repeats the film-club and table-tennis points without adding a precise summary of the overall pattern. Some linking is mechanical, particularly “over the years” and “with each passing year.” Grouping the stable or fluctuating activities together, then the major rises and falls, would create a more purposeful progression and clearer comparisons.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “zig-zag curve,” “dramatic rise,” “steady rise,” and “biggest fall,” which makes the main trends understandable. However, some choices are informal or imprecise for an academic report. “Most loved activity” and “new favourite” describe popularity or preference, which the graph does not measure; “highest participation” would be more accurate. “Department” is also not an appropriate label for martial arts in this context, and “sport” is too narrow when referring to table tennis as an activity. Repetition of “number of participants” and “over the years” limits flexibility. Aim for precise trend language such as “remained the most popular activity by participation” and “increased substantially,” while avoiding unsupported evaluative wording.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, and most of the meaning remains clear. For example, “On the other hand, the number of people playing Table tennis has seen a dramatic rise…” combines a contrast with a trend description. Some grammatical and punctuation errors remain. In “The highest number of participants were,” the subject is singular, so the verb should be “was”; similarly, “The Martial arts department has seen” shifts awkwardly from the past-period reporting context. There are missing spaces after full stops in “Australia. It” and “2020.On,” and “The X-axis shows the Year and Y-axis shows…” needs articles for natural sentence structure. Use consistent past-tense reporting and check sentence boundaries, agreement, and articles to improve accuracy.
