Student answer (Band 7.5)
The line graph illustrates the number of people who participated in five different activities at a single social center in Melbourne, Australia between 2000 and 2020.
Overall, film club remained the most popular activity, while table tennis experienced significant growth. In contrast, amateur dramatics declined over the years, whereas musical performances gained popularity.
In 2000, approximately 64 people attended the film club, compared with 36 for martial arts and 24 for amateur dramatics. Film club participants fell to 60 in 2010 before increasing to 66 in 2020. Martial art figures fluctuated throughout the years, increasing upto 39 in 2010 and finishing at around 36 participants.
Table tennis attracted 16 participants in 2000, rising to 20 in 2005 and remained stable until 2010. Its popularity increased rapidly, reaching 38 participants in 2015 and 54 in 2020, making it the second most popular activity. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
The response selects the main features effectively: film club remains the largest activity, table tennis rises markedly, amateur dramatics falls, and musical performances begin later and grow. These trends are supported with relevant figures, including table tennis’s rise from 16 to 54 and amateur dramatics’ fall to 6. The overview is clear and the account covers all five activities. Most reported values are close to the chart; the main small imprecision is table tennis at 2015, given as 38 rather than approximately 36. The comparison that table tennis becomes second most popular by 2020 is also accurate. To make the report still more complete, include the film club’s slight recovery after 2010 and avoid relying on broad descriptions where a precise comparison would add value.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The response is organised in a clear progression: an introduction, a concise overview, then detailed paragraphs covering the activities and their changes over time. Linking expressions such as “In contrast,” “Meanwhile,” and “Afterwards” help signal comparisons and sequence, while the grouping of related trends makes the account easy to follow. The progression within the paragraphs is generally logical, and references such as “its popularity” are understandable in context. Some connections between series could be made more explicit, particularly when moving from the film club and martial arts to table tennis. A more deliberate grouping of the highest and lowest activities, or clearer transitions between them, would make cohesion more seamless and less dependent on repeated time markers.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
There is a good range of task-appropriate vocabulary, including “remained the most popular,” “experienced significant growth,” “fluctuated,” “declined sharply,” and “continued rising.” These choices communicate trends clearly and show some flexibility beyond basic descriptions. A few expressions are less precise or natural: “Martial art figures” should refer to “martial arts participation,” and “increasing upto 39” is better expressed as “rising to approximately 38.” “Popularity” is also repeated several times where “participation” or “the number of participants” would be more exact. Overall, the vocabulary is sufficient for clear reporting, but more consistent precision in collocations and less repetition would strengthen the description.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5
The response uses a range of sentence forms, including complex contrasts such as “In contrast, amateur dramatics declined over the years, whereas musical performances gained popularity.” Most sentences are accurate and easy to understand, and tense use is generally appropriate for describing past data. There are a few grammatical slips: “rising to 20 in 2005 and remained stable” should maintain parallel structure (“rising … and remaining stable”), while “increasing upto 39” needs the standard form “increasing to approximately 38.” The phrase “Martial art figures” also has a number-form issue within the sentence. These do not obscure meaning, but checking parallel verb forms and sentence-level agreement would improve consistency.
