Student answer (Band 5.5)

The line graph illustrates the number of participants for different activities at one social center in two countries Melbourne, Australia over the period from 2000 to 2020.

Overall, Table tennis reach a peaked while Amateur dramatics plummeted. On the other hand, Film club remain stable from the starting point and Material arts fluctuate slightly. Meanwhile, the starting point of Musical performance was in 2005 and increased slightly.

Firstly, table tennis take start from 17 participants and fluctuate slightly between 2000 and 2010, after that rose at 53 participants by 2020 and Musical performances began from 2005 rose at 12 then slightly increased by 3 more points by 2020. While film club was 1 to 2 points increase from its starting point.

Furthermore, martial arts fluctuate through out the period from starting point to 2020.

Amateur dramatics, initially with 27 participants and slightly increase by 1 till 2005, subsequently dipped by 20 participants from 2005 to 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify several important patterns, especially the sharp rise in table-tennis participation and the decline in amateur dramatics, and you include an overall summary. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: musical performances began in 2000, not 2005, and rose from zero to about 18; table tennis was broadly stable to 2010 before climbing, rather than fluctuating throughout that period. The film club remained near 60–66, while martial arts fluctuated around the mid-30s, but these trends are only vaguely described. The opening also incorrectly says the centre is in “two countries”; it is one centre in Melbourne. More precise comparisons and accurate reporting of the main stages would make the summary more complete and better supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview and paragraphs describing individual activities. This gives the reader some organisation, and phrases such as “On the other hand” and “Furthermore” show an attempt to connect ideas. However, progression is not consistently clear: table tennis and musical performances are discussed in more than one place, and the final paragraph repeats earlier points without adding a clear comparison. Some linking is awkward or incomplete, particularly “While film club was 1 to 2 points increase…” and the sentence beginning “Amateur dramatics, initially…”. Grouping the series by contrasting trends—for example, rising activities versus declining or stable ones—and using clearer links between sentences would improve the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant trend vocabulary, including “plummeted,” “fluctuate,” “increased,” and “in stark contrast,” showing an attempt to describe change rather than simply list figures. However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or repetitive. “Reach a peaked” and “was carried upward trend” do not express the trends naturally, while “Material arts” is an incorrect name for “martial arts.” “Noticeable” is also vague in this context, and “points” is less precise than “participants” when describing the figures. Aim for accurate, natural phrases such as “rose steadily,” “remained relatively stable,” and “fell sharply,” and check the exact activity labels before using them.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mixture of simple statements and longer sentences, including clauses introduced by “while” and “after that.” However, errors occur frequently, and some sentences are difficult to interpret. Examples include “Table tennis reach a peaked,” “Film club remain stable,” and “Musical performances began from 2005 rose,” where verb forms and sentence construction are faulty. There are also problems with articles and agreement, as in “the table tennis was” and “the Musical performances was.” The opening phrase “in two countries Melbourne, Australia” also lacks a clear grammatical relationship between the location details. Practise forming complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and use past-tense forms consistently when reporting the historical data.
