Student answer (Band 6.5)

The graph illustrates the quantity of participants for their individual activities at a social centre in Melbourne, Australia from 2000 to 2020.

Overall , We see the rise in popularity of Table tennis and musical performances. On the other hand, we see decline in popularity for amateur dramatics. Also, activities like film club and martial arts don't really see much changes to their participants throughout the years.

Film club sees a slight dip in participants from 2000 to 2010 seeing its lowest participants at around 60 in 2010 then its popularity increases from 2010 to 2020 making it the most common option in 2020 at around 65 participants.Similiar to film club martial arts didn't see many changes either . It started with more than 35 participants in 2000 but unlike film club its highest participants were in 2010 at about 38. Finally having 35 participants in 2020.

Table tennis is the second most popular activity in 2020 but it wasn't as popular in 2000.Infact, it only had 20 participants in the year 2010.But after 2010 its popularity started skyrocketing to a astonishing 52 participants in 2020. On the other hand, Musical performances didn't have a single participant until 2005. Then it started gaining some participants throughout the years standing at around 15 participants in 2020.

Finally, amateur dramatics had more than 25 participants in 2000. But its popularity started declining from 2005. In the year 2010 it had the same amount of participants as table tennis. Though table tennis skyrocketed in popularity from there, amateur dramatics saw a massive dip in popularitiy since then, now standing at just 4 participants in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response selects the main patterns accurately and gives a clear overview: table tennis and musical performances rise, amateur dramatics declines, and film club and martial arts remain comparatively stable. The supporting figures are generally consistent with the chart, including film club’s low point of about 60 in 2010 and table tennis’s sharp growth after 2010. Comparisons are also useful, particularly noting that table tennis overtakes amateur dramatics. This is a well-focused summary with relevant detail. To make the account more fully developed, report the musical performances series’ starting point precisely as zero in 2000 and 2005, rather than saying there were no participants “until 2005,” which could imply a rise that year. Avoid slightly broad descriptions such as “didn't see many changes” where the fluctuations can be specified.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group the steadier activities and the more changing series. The progression from film club and martial arts to table tennis, musical performances, and amateur dramatics is easy to follow. Linking phrases such as “On the other hand,” “Finally,” and “Though” help signal contrasts. However, some connections feel mechanical or repetitive, and the final paragraph repeats the contrast between table tennis and amateur dramatics already made earlier. Punctuation spacing and sentence boundaries also interrupt the flow in places, for example “Overall , We see” and the run-on transition after “participants.” More controlled paragraph links and less repeated comparison would make cohesion smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

There is an adequate range of vocabulary for describing trends, including “slight dip,” “declining,” “skyrocketing,” and “most common option.” These choices make the main movements clear, and the writer varies wording rather than relying only on “increase” and “decrease.” Some expressions are informal or imprecise for an academic report: “quantity of participants,” “popularitiy,” and “a astonishing” weaken accuracy, while “skyrocketing” is rather dramatic for neutral data description. “Participants” is also repeated frequently. Use more conventional collocations such as “number of participants” and “rose sharply,” and check spelling and article use in vocabulary phrases. Greater precision and a more consistently formal register would strengthen this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex forms, including contrast clauses such as “Though table tennis skyrocketed in popularity from there” and time clauses describing changes between years. Most meanings remain clear, but some grammatical and punctuation errors recur. Examples include the capitalisation and punctuation in “Overall , We see,” the missing space after “performances,” and the sentence boundary in “participants.Similiar.” There are also awkward constructions such as “Finally having 35 participants in 2020,” which is a fragment, and “a astonishing,” where the article does not agree with the following sound. Aim to form complete sentences consistently, use articles accurately, and proofread punctuation. More accurate control of these structures would make the varied sentence forms more effective.
