Student answer (Band 6.0)
The line graph illustrates the number of participants performing various activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia between 2000 to 2020.
Overall, the number of people participating in film club remained high throughout the years 2000 to 2020 with slight change. There is a significant increase in number of participants playing table tennis and musical performances. While, the number of participants playing martial arts remained stable with almost no change over the years.
The number of participants participating in film club was higher than any other activity starting and ending with almost same number as 64. Participants of martial arts undergo mild fluctuations having 35 participants in 2000 and then 30 in 2005 and then again raised to 35 in 2020. The number of participants playing table tennis remained stable over the years and, subsequently there was a surge in participants reaching up to 50 in 2020.
There were no participants performing musical activities in 2005, and there was significant increase until 2020 reaching the number to 15.
There were 25 participants performing in amateur dramatics but its number declined sharply over the years reaching to 5 in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main patterns: film club remains the most popular activity, table tennis rises substantially, and amateur dramatics declines. The overview also notes the relative stability of martial arts. Most reported figures are close to the chart, but the description of table tennis as “remained stable” is misleading: it rises from about 16 to 54, especially after 2010. The opening comparison that film club starts and ends at “almost same number as 64” also misses the increase to around 66 by 2020. Musical performances began at zero in 2000, not 2005. The response covers the key activities, but some trends and comparisons are not fully or accurately developed; prioritise the largest changes and describe their stages more precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction and overview to details about the activities, and the main points are generally easy to follow. However, progression within the detail paragraphs is uneven: table tennis is first called stable and then said to surge, which makes the account difficult to track. Several sentences also rely on repeated “and then” sequencing, particularly in the martial arts description, rather than grouping figures into a clear trend. The standalone paragraphs for musical performances and amateur dramatics are understandable, but could be integrated into a more balanced comparison. Use clearer topic grouping and linking phrases such as “by contrast” or “from 2010 onwards” to make relationships between trends explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “remained high,” “mild fluctuations,” “surge,” and “declined sharply,” which helps communicate changes over time. Some choices are imprecise or repetitive, however. “Participants performing in amateur dramatics” and “participants playing musical performances” do not collocate naturally, and “participating” is repeated frequently. The phrase “significant increase” is used for more than one series without distinguishing the scale of change. More precise verbs and activity-specific phrasing would improve clarity and flexibility. For example, describe people as attending musical performances, taking part in martial arts, or participating in amateur dramatics, and reserve “surged” for the pronounced rise in table tennis.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the overview sentence beginning “While” and the sentence describing martial arts fluctuations. Meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors remain. The introduction uses “between 2000 to 2020”; the correct pattern is “between 2000 and 2020.” In “There is a significant increase,” the present tense is inconsistent with the completed period, so “There was” is appropriate. “While, the number…” has an unnecessary comma after the linking word, and “reaching the number to 15” has an awkward grammatical construction. Aim for consistent past-tense reporting and check prepositions, articles, and punctuation when combining clauses.
