Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph compares the participants playing in various activities at Melbourne social centre from 2000 to 2020.

Overall, the most popular choice of activity among participants is film club and martial arts throughout the period. While amateur dramatics showed the downward trend, table tennis rose significantly, and musical performances remained least popular.

In 2000, the large number of people showed interest in film club which was 65, whereas in martial arts 37 participants. Number of participants in film club fell to 60 in 2010, after which it recovered its position in 2020 by 65. Followed by martial arts which begins with 37 people and showed fluctuations in 2005 where participants dropped and again rose. Martial arts showed variations until the end and stand by the same number of people in the beginning.

Moving ahead, almost a quarter of people choose amateur dramatics, table tennis by 17 people, and no musical performances were conducted in 2000. Number of people in amateur dramatics declined consistently after 2005 until 2020. In contrast, table tennis started with 18 people in 2000, and steadily rose to 20 people in 2010, after which it rose dramatically to 55 people in 2020. However, musical performances remains the lowest choice by people started in 2005 and surpassed amateur dramatics in 2015 until 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main patterns: film club remains the leading activity, table tennis rises sharply, amateur dramatics declines, and musical performances begin at zero and grow. The overview is relevant, and the figures you give for film club and table tennis are broadly consistent with the chart. However, some comparisons are unclear or inaccurate. Saying film club “recovered its position” is vague, and “musical performances remains the lowest choice” overlooks that it overtakes amateur dramatics by 2015 and is no longer the least popular activity at the end. The martial-arts account also gives only general fluctuations rather than reporting its fairly stable range. More precise end-point comparisons and a clearer account of the changing rankings would make the summary more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs describing the data. The broad progression from the more popular activities to the remaining series is easy to follow, and linking phrases such as “In contrast” help signal comparison. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. “Followed by martial arts” is a sentence fragment, while “Moving ahead” does not clearly indicate which period or comparison follows. The final sentence combines the start of musical performances with their later ranking, making the timeline harder to track. Organise each body paragraph around a clear comparison and use explicit time references, such as “by 2015” and “over the final decade,” to improve progression and cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing trends, including “declined,” “fluctuations,” “steadily rose,” and “rose dramatically.” These choices help communicate the main movements, and the meaning is generally clear. Some expressions are imprecise or do not collocate naturally in this context: “recovered its position,” “showed interest in film club,” and “remains the lowest choice by people” sound awkward or obscure the intended comparison. “Conducted” is also not the best way to describe participation in musical performances. Aim for concise, conventional chart language and distinguish clearly between participant numbers and popularity—for example, say that a figure “fell to” or “increased to” a stated level. This would make your descriptions more precise and natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses linked with “whereas,” “after which,” and “until.” Most of the trends remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. In “the most popular choice … is film club,” the present tense does not match the past period; “musical performances remains” also has subject–verb disagreement. Other examples include the missing article in “at Melbourne social centre” and the fragment “Followed by martial arts.” The sentence beginning “In 2000, the large number of people showed interest” is also awkwardly constructed. Check tense consistency, agreement, articles, and sentence completeness, especially when joining comparisons. More accurate control of these forms would strengthen the range you are already attempting.
