Student answer (Band 6.0)

The graph provides data on the numbers of participants for various activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia for the period between 2000 and 2020.

Overall, the graph represents information of five distinct activities and the number of participants who participated in these activities from the period 2000 to 2020. Film club was the most popular activity with highest number of participants throughout the period from 2000 to 2020 and number of participants for Amateur dramatics activity declined gradually from the year 2005 to 2020, making it the least popular activity in year 2020. In addition, number of participants for Table tennis activity rose substantially from the year 2010 to 2020, reaching the second highest participated activity in the year 2020.

Starting from the Film club activity which remained the highest participated activity throughout the period from 2000 to 2020 and then Table tennis activity which was second lowest participated activity in 2000 but after 2010, it rose gradually and became the second highest participated activity among the others. Moreover, participation in Martial arts activity fluctuated thoughout the period from 2000 to 2020.

The remaining activity includes Musical performances and Amateur dramatics where participation in Musical perfromances started in 2005 and then rose in modest pace but was still the second lowest participated activity in 2020. The Amateur dramatics activity declined gradually from the year 2000 to 2020 and became the lowest participated activity in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response identifies the main patterns accurately: the film club remains the largest activity, table tennis rises sharply to become second by 2020, and amateur dramatics falls to the lowest level. This gives the report a relevant overview and supports the 6.5-level performance, with some features already clearly selected and compared. However, a few details are inaccurate or insufficiently precise. Musical performances began in 2010, not 2005, and amateur dramatics rises slightly from 26 to 28 between 2000 and 2005 before declining; it did not fall continuously from 2000. The account also says table tennis rose gradually after 2010, although its strongest increase is from 2010 to 2020. More accurate staging and a few key figures would make the coverage more complete and developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs describing the activities. The main comparisons are generally easy to follow, and transitions such as “Overall,” “Moreover,” and “The remaining activity” help signal relationships. However, progression is weakened by repetition: the film club’s leading position and amateur dramatics’ decline are stated in both the overview and later paragraphs with little additional detail. Some linking is also mechanical, particularly “Starting from … and then …,” which creates an incomplete-feeling sequence rather than a clear comparison. Grouping the series by contrasting trends and using references such as “this figure” or “the latter” more precisely would improve flow and cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

There is an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “fluctuated,” “declined,” “rose substantially,” and “least popular,” which communicates the broad trends. The writer also attempts more formal phrasing, but several expressions are unnatural or imprecise, such as “highest participated activity,” “second lowest participated activity,” and “rose in modest pace.” Repetition of “activity” and “number of participants” limits flexibility, while spelling slips in “thoughout” and “perfromances” reduce accuracy. These issues do not prevent understanding, but more natural collocations and varied trend language are needed for stronger lexical control. Prefer concise forms such as “had the most participants” and “increased modestly.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “which” and “where,” and most meanings remain clear. Some grammatical errors persist, however. In “Film club was the most popular activity with highest number,” the article is missing before “highest”; “the number of participants … declined” would also be more accurate than the repeated “number of participants for … declined.” The sentence beginning “Starting from the Film club activity … and then Table tennis activity” is not a complete, well-controlled sentence. There are also inconsistent constructions such as “from the period 2000 to 2020.” More complete sentence structures, accurate articles, and consistent phrasing would improve control while retaining the current range.
