IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graph below gives information on the numbers of participants for different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia for the period 2000 to 2020.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The given line graph represents the data about how many individuals participated in distinct activities held at a social centre in a city in Australia from year 2000 to 2020.
Overall, the one activity in which people participated the most during this whole timespan was film club. A major rise took place in the number of people who took a part in table tenis. The count of people who did the amateur dramatics declined sharply over the time period of 20 years.
Firstly, people participating in film club remained almost steady all over the given time period whereas a grudual fluctuation took place in the number of participants of martial arts. A sharp increase occured in the number of individuals playing table tenis.
Secondly, the count of people appearing for muscial performaces rose from 0 to more than 10 in the 15 years. A contrasting patteren was seen when the number of people engaged in amateur dramatics declined sharply and reached to less than 10 by the year 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You identify the main patterns accurately: film club remains the most popular activity, table tennis rises substantially, and amateur dramatics falls sharply to below 10 by 2020. The overview is clear, and the report also notes the increase in musical performances from zero. These are relevant selections and show a sound understanding of the graph. However, some details are generalised: “remained almost steady” does not mention the slight dip and later recovery in film-club numbers, while the martial-arts trend is described only as a “gradual fluctuation.” Adding a few approximate figures and noting that table tennis overtakes martial arts by 2015 would make the comparisons more fully supported and precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and two detail paragraphs. “Overall,” “Firstly,” and “Secondly” help signal the stages of the report, and the reader can follow the main trends. This coherent arrangement is a strength. However, the sequencing is somewhat mechanical, and the detail paragraphs do not compare the activities directly. For example, the rise in table tennis and the relatively stable martial-arts figures could be linked to show how their positions change over time. The reference “A contrasting pattern” is understandable, but the contrast is not explicitly developed. Use more varied links and organise details around comparisons or trends rather than relying mainly on numbered transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “participants,” “declined sharply,” “remained almost steady,” and “rose.” These choices communicate the main trends, and the meaning is generally clear. There are, however, several spelling errors—“table tenis,” “grudual,” “muscial,” “performaces,” and “patteren”—which reduce accuracy. Some expressions are also awkward or imprecise: “did the amateur dramatics” and “appearing for musical performances” are not natural ways to describe participation, while “a major rise took place” is less direct than a standard trend phrase. Aim for accurate spelling and natural collocations, and use precise verbs such as “participated in,” “increased,” and “fluctuated.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use both simple and more developed sentence forms, including the overview sentence beginning “A major rise took place…” and the clause “when the number of people engaged in amateur dramatics declined sharply.” Most sentences are understandable, and grammatical errors rarely obscure the intended meaning. Some patterns are not fully controlled, however. In “people participating in film club remained almost steady,” the people—not the activity—are said to remain steady; a clearer construction would make the number the subject. “People who took a part” also uses an unnecessary article, and “reached to less than 10” has an incorrect verb pattern. Continue varying sentence structures, while checking subject choice, articles, and verb complementation.
