Student answer (Band 6.5)
The line graph illustrates the numbers of participants that join various types of activities at a social centre in Melbourne, Australia for the period 2000 to 2020.
Overall, film club remains the most popular activity, whereas amateur dramatics becomes the lowest with a sharp decline over the years. Table tennis after a small dip takes a huge surge in number of participants.
Film club had the most number of participants ranging between 60 and 70 from year [redacted phone], whereas table tennis saw a dramatic increase from 2000 to 2020 with the number increasing from 20 to 50 taking over amateur dramatics and martial arts.
Martial arts formed a range between 30-40 participants over the complete period, whereas the number of participants in amateur dramatics saw a small increase from [redacted phone] with members increasing from approximately 25 to 30, but saw a sharp decline over the years with participants number dropping to approximately 10 only. On the other hand musical performances was introduced in 2005, but saw a good increase with the participants going from 0 to approximately 15 by 2020 crossing amateur dramatics after 2015.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response selects the main patterns and gives a clear overview: film club stays highest, amateur dramatics declines, and table tennis rises strongly. Most reported figures and comparisons are broadly consistent with the graph, including the approximate starting and ending levels for amateur dramatics and the rise in musical performances. However, some details are imprecise: table tennis starts at about 16, not 20, and musical performances begin in 2010 rather than being introduced in 2005. The claim that table tennis takes over both amateur dramatics and martial arts is also too broad; it exceeds amateur dramatics by 2015 and martial arts by 2020. More precise reporting of these stages would strengthen an otherwise well-selected account.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure, moving from an introduction and overview to details about the five activities. The overview identifies the most important contrasts, and phrases such as “whereas” and “On the other hand” help signal comparisons. However, the final paragraph groups several trends into one long sentence, making the sequence of changes harder to follow. Some linking is also mechanical, with “whereas” repeated to connect different kinds of information. Organise the details into clearer comparisons—for example, stable activities together and changing activities together—and use more precise references to years so readers can follow each trend without rereading.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
There is an adequate range of vocabulary for describing trends, including “sharp decline,” “dramatic increase,” “range,” and “crossing.” These choices make the main movements understandable. Some expressions are imprecise or unnatural for formal data reporting, however: “huge surge in number,” “good increase,” and “most number of participants” could be replaced with more conventional collocations. “Takes over” is also vague when describing one series becoming higher than another. Aim for concise, accurate trend language and avoid evaluative wording such as “good,” which does not describe the data objectively. This would make the account more precise while retaining its clear meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentences, including comparisons with “whereas” and a subordinate clause beginning “but saw a sharp decline.” Meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “the numbers of participants that join” shifts awkwardly from the past period to the present, while “from year 2000-2020” lacks a natural article and preposition pattern. In “participants number dropping,” the noun phrase is not formed correctly, and “musical performances was introduced” has a subject–verb agreement error. Check tense consistency when describing the completed period, and review agreement and sentence boundaries in longer comparisons to improve accuracy.
