Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response covers all five activities and gives a clear overview of the main patterns: film club remains the largest, table tennis rises strongly, and amateur dramatics declines. Most figures and trends are close to the chart, including the film club’s slight fall then recovery and the growth in musical performances from zero. This meets the task well, with some evidence of the more selective overview expected at a stronger level. However, the overview is not fully precise: amateur dramatics is not the least throughout, since musical performances begin at zero, and table tennis is described as growing without noting that it overtakes martial arts by 2020. Include the key crossover and distinguish the lowest series at the start from the lowest at the end.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and two detail paragraphs that group the activities. This gives the information a coherent overall arrangement. However, progression within the detail paragraphs is weakened by very long sentences that combine several series and time points. For example, the paragraph beginning “In 2000” moves from film club to martial arts and then amateur dramatics with limited separation. Connectors such as “whereas,” “moreover,” and “in contrast” are sometimes awkwardly placed or do not clearly signal the relationship between the data. Use shorter sentences, group related trends more deliberately, and make references such as “it” unambiguous to improve cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
There is enough topic vocabulary to describe the chart, including “decline slightly,” “rose gradually,” “fluctuated,” and “increased steadily.” These choices show an attempt to vary language rather than repeat only basic verbs. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “accounted the highest participant,” “number of applicants,” and “experienced with 0 participants.” The repeated use of “contestants,” “applicants,” and “candidates” is also unsuitable for people attending social-centre activities; “participants” is the more precise term. Spelling errors in “Melbourne” and “Australia” further reduce accuracy. Aim for natural chart-reporting phrases and use the same precise noun consistently.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts both simple and complex sentences, including clauses linked with “while,” “but,” and “whereas,” and the overall meaning is generally recoverable. However, control is inconsistent, particularly in longer sentences. Examples include “martial arts was fluctuated,” where the verb form is incorrect, and “it decline slightly,” which needs a past-tense form. There are also problems with articles and sentence boundaries, as in “the film club accounted the highest participant” and the run-on sentence beginning “In 2000.” Capitalisation and punctuation are inconsistent, including a lower-case “whereas” after a full stop. Build accuracy by using shorter past-tense sentences and checking subject–verb forms, articles, and punctuation.
