Student answer (Band 5.5)

The line graph illustrates the number of information of participants for five different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia, for the period 2000 to 2020.

Overall, the highest number of attendences have been seen in the film club activity, whereas the amateur dramatics participant was lowest at the end. The table tennis activity has became popular after a certain time and experienced a significant increase of participants.

The film club was always a popular choice for the participants, which is obvious in the graph. Since 2000, it was accounted the top participants involvement, nearly about 65 people. It is consistently followed the trend till end, and ended with the highest participants of all time, accounted for around 68 person, although it was slightly fell in 2010. The table tennis acitivity has experienced a drastical increase from 2010 and placed in the second position of popularity with around 58 participant. Although it started with only approximately 16 attendence. On the other hand, the martial arts activity has experienced a different trend, started with around 37 participant and fell to 32 and again it went up to around 40. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You provide a relevant overview, identifying the film club as the most popular activity and amateur dramatics as the least popular by the end, and you highlight table tennis’s strong rise. Most reported trends are recognisable, but several figures are inaccurate: film club ends at about 66, not 68; table tennis reaches about 54, not 58; and martial arts finishes near its starting level of 36, rather than 37. The musical performances began in 2010, not 2005, so this is a notable misreading. Amateur dramatics’ steady decline to around 6 is also omitted from the detail. The response covers the main task, but some features are less fully and accurately reported than others.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a clear overall shape: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing the activities. This gives the reader a basic route through the information, and contrasts such as “On the other hand” help signal a change of focus. However, the progression within the detail paragraph is not always smooth: film club, table tennis and martial arts are packed together, while amateur dramatics is not discussed. Some linking is mechanical or unclear, as in “Again, it fell slightly,” where the activity being referred to could be more explicit. The final paragraph is also brief and does not connect the musical performances trend to the other activities. Grouping the series by rising, falling and relatively stable trends would make the comparisons easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “significant increase,” “gradually experienced a growth,” and “popular choice,” so the main trends can generally be understood. However, inaccurate word forms, spelling and collocations are noticeable and sometimes make the description awkward: “number of information of participants,” “attendences,” “drastical increase,” and “participants involvement.” Repetition of “participants” and “experienced” also limits flexibility. Choose precise chart language and check spelling and natural combinations; for example, describe a series as “the number of participants” and say it “rose sharply.” These improvements would make the account clearer and more natural while retaining the relevant vocabulary already attempted.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses with “although” and “whereas,” and the overall meaning is usually recoverable. However, errors in verb forms, agreement and sentence construction occur across the response. Examples include “The table tennis activity has became popular,” “it was accounted the top participants involvement,” and “It is consistently followed the trend.” The sentence beginning “Although it started with only approximately 16 attendence” is incomplete, and “before ended 2020” has an incorrect verb pattern. Tense choices also shift between past and present when describing the completed period. Practise accurate past-tense reporting and complete clause structures, then proofread agreement and verb forms; this will help your varied sentence attempts communicate more reliably.
