Student answer (Band 6.0)
The line graph shows the data of number of people participating in different activities in a social center in Melbourne from year 2000 to 2020.
In a cursory glance, number of people participating in film club and martial arts have not fluctuated a lot. Table tennis and Musical Perfomances have shown a major increase in participants. On the contrary, Amateur dramatics has seen a decline in number of participants.
Zooming in, Film club participants decreased from 65 in year 2000 to around 60 in year 2010. However, from 2010 to 2020, participants again increased to 65. In contrast, Martial arts club has seen a constant changing pattern after every five years like for example, members decreased from 36 to around 31 between 2000 and 2005 but again increased to 36 in the year 2010.
Amateur dynamics saw a rise in members from 2000 to 2005, followed by a decline in the next 5 years. Since 2010 there has been a constant rise in participation. Interestingly, in 2010 Table tennis and Amateur dynamics had the same number of participants, but after that there was a decline in table tennis participants. Musical perfomances club had no participants from 2000 to 2005, but since then there has been a constant rise in people participating in the club.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify several important broad patterns: film-club numbers remain relatively stable, table tennis rises substantially, and amateur dramatics declines overall. However, some key details are inaccurate, which limits how fully the graph is reported. Most notably, amateur dramatics does not rise after 2010; it falls from about 20 participants to 6 by 2020. Table tennis also increases after 2010, rather than declining, reaching roughly 54 in 2020. The overview would be stronger if it highlighted that table tennis becomes the second-largest activity, while film club remains the most popular. Your account of musical performances and the early martial-arts fluctuations is relevant, but the main trends need more accurate development.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a summary of broad trends, and paragraphs describing individual activities. Sequencing phrases such as “However,” “In contrast,” and “Since 2010” help show relationships between points. This makes the report generally easy to follow. At times, though, the progression is weakened by unclear or contradictory references. For example, the statement that table tennis and amateur dramatics had the same number in 2010 is followed by a claim that table tennis declined, which conflicts with the graph and disrupts the comparison. “In a cursory glance” and “Zooming in” also feel conversational rather than serving as precise links. Grouping the rising activities together and the declining or stable ones together would make the comparisons more purposeful.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing trends, including “decline,” “increased,” “constant rise,” and “fluctuated.” These choices generally communicate the intended meaning, and the reader can understand the report. There are, however, some inaccurate or unnatural expressions: “data of number of people” and “constant changing pattern” are not idiomatic, while “cursory glance” is an awkward way to introduce an overview. The activity name “Amateur dynamics” is also repeatedly misreported, and “Perfomances” is misspelled. Aim for precise chart language and consistent use of the labels, such as “participant numbers,” “remained stable,” and “amateur dramatics.” This would make the description more natural and exact.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including contrast and time clauses: “However, from 2010 to 2020…” and “but since then…”. Most sentences remain understandable, and grammatical errors do not generally prevent the reader from following your account. Some errors are noticeable, however. For example, “number of people … have not fluctuated” has an agreement problem, and “Film club participants decreased from 65 in year 2000” needs an article or a more natural time expression. The sentence beginning “In contrast, Martial arts club has seen…” also shifts awkwardly between past and present perfect. Review articles, subject–verb agreement, and consistent past-tense reporting to improve control.
