Student answer (Band 5.5)

The line graph illustrates the number of participants for five different types of activities at one social center in Melbourne, Australia from 2000 to 2020. Overall, it is evident from the graph that the number of film club participants were high in the beginning and maintained it till 2020 while there were no participants for musical performances in the beggining and the table tennis participants were lowest at the start in 2000. The amateur dramatics participants were lowest at the end i.e, 2020.

The bar chart shows that almost all particpants involved in different types of activities saw a surge or maintained a steady pace except for amateur dramatics which after intial spike seen a downfall trend till the very end in 2020.

The table tennis participants saw a dramatic upward trend after 2010 and finished with the second highest number of participants in 2020.The Musical performances seen a steady upward trend from 2005 till 2020.

So, it can be seen from the graph that the number of particpants for film club were highest from start till 2020 while amateur dramatics participants were lowest in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify several important features: film club participation remains high, table tennis rises sharply, and amateur dramatics declines to the lowest level by 2020. However, the overview is partly unclear and some claims are inaccurate or insufficiently supported. Film club numbers do not simply remain unchanged: they dip from about 64 to 60 before rising to 66. The statement that almost all activities “saw a surge or maintained a steady pace” overlooks the fluctuations in martial arts, while musical performances begin in 2010, not 2005. You also omit useful comparisons, such as table tennis overtaking martial arts by 2015 and becoming second highest in 2020. Select the main trends more precisely and support them with key figures.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has an introduction, an overview, and further paragraphs, so the reader can recognise a basic structure. However, progression is limited because the final paragraph repeats the overview rather than adding a distinct comparison, and the second paragraph makes a broad claim before the later paragraphs discuss only selected activities. Linking phrases such as “Overall,” “So,” and “while” are used, but some connections are mechanical or unclear; for example, “The bar chart shows” does not accurately identify the visual and does not create a meaningful transition. Group the information into a clear overview followed by comparisons of the changing and relatively stable activities, and avoid repeating the same ranking in the conclusion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant trend vocabulary, including “dramatic upward trend,” “steady upward trend,” and “downfall trend,” which helps communicate the general direction of change. However, the range is limited and several expressions are imprecise or repetitive. “Maintained it” does not clearly describe the small fall and subsequent rise in film club numbers, while “saw a surge or maintained a steady pace” is too general for the different patterns shown. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “beggining,” “particpants,” and “intial,” and inconsistent spelling of “center/centre.” Use precise terms such as “fluctuated,” “declined steadily,” and “rose sharply,” and check spelling and collocations carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including clauses with “while” and “except for,” and the overall meaning is usually understandable. However, errors in agreement, tense, articles, and sentence construction recur. In “the number of film club participants were high,” the singular subject “number” requires “was”; “maintained it till 2020” also lacks a clear grammatical reference. The sentence beginning “The Musical performances seen…” is missing a finite verb, and “after intial spike seen a downfall trend” has faulty clause structure. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after full stops and awkward forms such as “i.e,”. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement and complete clauses before adding complex structures.
