Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph represents the number of participants for different activities at a social centre in Melbourne, Australia, across the period 2000 to 2020.

Activities like film club and martial arts show a steady trend across the twenty years. Martial arts had around 37 participants in the year 2000 and still has the same number of participants in the year 2020. Whereas there was a steady decline in individuals participating in the Film club between the years 2000 and 2010, the number of participants again increased in the Film club over the span of ten years from 2010 to 2020, reaching the maximum number of participants.

Other than that, there was a great increase in the number of participants in activities like table tennis and musical performances. There was a limited number of people engaging in table tennis, ranging from 15 to 20 between the years 2000 and 2010; a sudden rise took place in participation from 2010 to 2020, reaching up to 50 individuals. From the year 2000 to 2005, there was no involvement in musical performances, but from the year 2005 there is drastic increase in participation in musical performances.

On the contrary, there was a slight increase in participants performing amateur drama until 2005; after that, the trend showed a steady decline in people performing this activity, causing the lowest number of participants in the year 2020.

Overall, the graph represents the number of participants in different activities; people began to show a great interest in musical performances and musical activities, whereas individuals have less interest in amateur dramatics.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover all five activities and identify the main contrasts: film club remains high, table tennis rises markedly, and amateur dramatics declines. Several figures and trends are broadly accurate, such as film club falling to 2010 before recovering and amateur dramatics reaching its lowest point in 2020. However, some details are imprecise or misleading. Martial arts fluctuates rather than showing a steady trend, and its values are about 36 at both endpoints, not 37. Musical performances begin to rise in 2010, not 2005, and the increase is gradual rather than drastic. The overview also repeats the general trends without clearly ranking the final figures. More precise comparisons and a concise overview would make the key features clearer and more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response is arranged in a generally logical sequence: it introduces the graph, groups activities with broadly stable patterns, discusses rising and falling series, and ends with an overview. Paragraphing helps separate these points, and connectors such as “Whereas,” “Other than that,” and “On the contrary” show an effort to link ideas. At times, however, the connections are mechanical or not quite suited to the relationship being expressed; “On the contrary” does not establish a direct contrast with the preceding paragraph. The final overview also repeats points already made rather than synthesising them. Grouping the series more consistently and using clearer references to the time periods would improve progression and cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing trends, including “steady decline,” “increased,” “sudden rise,” and “lowest number.” These choices make the main movements understandable, and there is some attempt to vary wording rather than rely only on “increase” and “decrease.” However, several expressions are imprecise or unnatural for a graph report: “limited number of people engaging,” “no involvement,” and “people began to show a great interest” describe participation as motivation rather than reporting the figures. “Drastic increase” also overstates the gradual rise in musical performances. Aim for concise, neutral trend language and use activity names consistently. More precise collocations would make the account clearer and more appropriately formal.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a contrast clause beginning “Whereas” and a time clause beginning “after that.” Most sentences communicate the intended trends, but some grammatical choices are inconsistent. For example, “Martial arts had … and still has” shifts from past to present when describing a period that ended in 2020; keep the account in the past tense. In “from the year 2005 there is drastic increase,” the tense and article are problematic, and “causing the lowest number” is an awkwardly attached participle clause. Some long sentences also combine several ideas, making control less secure. Use past-tense reporting consistently and check articles and clause links while retaining varied sentence structures.
