Student answer (Band 6.5)

The given line graph depicts information about the count of participants for various activities at a communal centre in Melbourne, Australia from 2000 to 2020.

Overall, it is vivid that the participation in Film club and Martial arts fluctuated throughout the period. While the activities such as Table tennis and Musical performances showed an increasing popularity, the Amateur dramatics represents a declining pattern.

At a glance, it is abundantly clear that Film club participants were far more as compared to the Martial arts club, also they showed a similar pattern in these 20 years. In Film club, there were above 60 students initially, which then decreased minimally and reached to almost 60 in 2010. Similarly, Martial arts participants were above 35 in 2000, however they declined a little bit and then managed to reach just below 40. In 2015, Film club showed a rising trend till 2020, in converse Martial arts participants showed moderate fluctuation by felling down and rising up.

Probing further, it can be seen that participants in Amateur dramatics club were near 30 initially. However, it showed a declining pattern after 2005, reaching to almost below 10 participants. In Table tennis, the number of participants were below 20, but it kept rising and surpassed the participants of Amateur dramatics club in 2010. In 2015, it rose dramatically to almost 40 people and managed to reach above 55 in 2020. Likewise, Musical performance club started in 2005, also presents an increasing trend from 10 people in 2010 to 20 in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response gives a clear overview of the main patterns: film club and martial arts remain comparatively stable, table tennis and musical performances rise, and amateur dramatics declines. It also supports these points with relevant figures, such as film club falling to about 60 in 2010 before recovering, and table tennis reaching roughly 54 by 2020. Most comparisons are grounded in the graph. However, a few details are imprecise: table tennis first exceeds amateur dramatics in 2015, not 2010, and musical performances begin in 2010 rather than 2005; the figure for 2020 is about 18, not 20. These are limited inaccuracies within an otherwise well-selected account. More exact reporting of turning points would strengthen the response further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is arranged in a clear sequence: introduction, overview, then two paragraphs comparing the activities. This gives the reader a coherent account, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Similarly,” and “Probing further” help signal relationships between points. The organisation is effective, but cohesion is not always smooth or precise. For example, “At a glance” and “Probing further” are somewhat formulaic, while the long sentence beginning “In 2015” combines contrasting trends in a way that is difficult to follow. Some references, such as “they” in “they showed a similar pattern,” could be clearer. Use simpler transitions and make each comparison’s subject explicit to improve flow and control.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

There is an adequate range of vocabulary for describing trends, including “fluctuated,” “declining pattern,” “surpassed,” and “rising trend.” These choices help communicate the main movements, and the meaning is generally clear. However, some expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “it is vivid that,” “far more as compared to,” and “in converse.” “Felling down” is also an incorrect word choice, and “students” is not the most suitable label for participants at a social centre. Repetition of “participants” and “trend” limits flexibility. Aim for precise, natural collocations such as “it is clear that,” “considerably higher than,” and “by contrast,” while varying terms for increases and decreases.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex structures, including contrast clauses with “While” and “However,” and several sentences communicate comparisons successfully. Some grammatical errors remain, but they rarely prevent understanding. Examples include “the Amateur dramatics represents,” where the verb should agree with the activity name, and “the number of participants were,” where “number” takes a singular verb. There are also problems with articles and sentence construction in “In 2015, Film club showed a rising trend till 2020, in converse Martial arts participants…” The sentence needs clearer punctuation and a grammatical contrast structure. Review subject–verb agreement and build shorter, controlled sentences when comparing multiple series.
