Student answer (Band 6.5)

The graph illustrates data about the number of people participating in various activities ( film club, martial arts, amateur dramatics, table tennis and musical performances) from 2000 to 2020 at a social centre located in Melbourne, Australia.

As can be seen from the graph, the number of people participating in film club were the highest in both 2000 and 2020. In contrast, the musical performances had zero participants in 2000. A significant number of people started playing table tennis after 2010.

In 2000, there wasn't a single participant enrolled in the musical performances. In contrast, the film club had around 64 participants which was the highest for that year. After 2005, the participants for the musical performances started to increase and reached 10 in 2010 and after that it kept on rising and reached 14 and 15 in 2015 and 2020. The number of people involved in table tennis saw an increase as the number reached to 20 in 2005 from 17 in 2000. A sharp increment can be seen after 2010 as the people playing table tennis reached 35 in 2015 and around 54 in 2020.

On the other hand, the film club had a stable number of people involved in the activity throughout the years. It started with 64 participants in 2000 and saw a small decrease in 2010 as the number touched 60 but the proportion of people gradually increased and reached around 66 which was the highest compared to other activities in 2020. Conversely, the people enrolled for the martial arts fluctuated over the years. It started with 37 people in 2000, decreased in 2005 and 2015 with only 31 and 33 people participating, again had an increase in 2010 and 2020 reaching 37 and 34 members. The amateur dramatics where around 25 people were involved in 2000 kept on declining after 2005 as the participants decreased to 20, 15 and 5 in 2010, 2015 and 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main overall patterns: film club remains the largest activity, musical performances begin at zero, table tennis rises sharply, and amateur dramatics declines. Most reported figures are close to the chart, including film club at about 64 and table tennis at roughly 54 in 2020. However, the overview is brief and does not clearly compare the contrasting scale of change across all activities; martial arts, for example, fluctuates within a fairly narrow range, a useful feature to highlight. Some details are inaccurate: musical performances are about 12, 16 and 18 in 2010, 2015 and 2020, rather than 10, 14 and 15; martial arts is about 36 in 2020, not 34. More precise selection and comparison would make the summary more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group activities and describe their changes. This makes the information generally easy to follow. Linking expressions such as “In contrast,” “On the other hand” and “Conversely” help signal comparisons, although their repeated use can feel mechanical, and some contrasts do not connect closely to the preceding point. The overview also repeats information later rather than establishing a fuller map of the main trends. Improve progression by grouping the rising activities together and the stable or declining ones together, then use fewer, more precise transitions. Clearer references to years and series would also make the comparisons flow more naturally.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing trends, including “stable,” “fluctuated,” “declining” and “sharp increment,” and the meaning is consistently understandable. There is some flexibility in how you describe increases and decreases, which supports the task. However, several expressions are imprecise or unnatural for chart reporting: “people started playing table tennis” suggests a personal action rather than a change in participation, while “the proportion of people” is not appropriate when the graph gives participant numbers. “Sharp increment” is also less idiomatic than “sharp increase.” Aim for accurate collocations and avoid repeating “number of people” and “participants” where more concise alternatives such as “attendance” or “participation” fit.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “as,” “while” and “which,” and most sentences communicate the intended trend clearly. Some grammatical errors remain, but they rarely obstruct understanding. For example, “the number of people participating in film club were the highest” has subject–verb disagreement; “the number … was highest” would be correct. In “reached to 20,” the verb does not take “to,” and “the amateur dramatics where around 25 people were involved” needs a more complete clause structure. There are also occasional article and punctuation issues, such as the spacing before the opening parenthesis. Continue checking agreement and sentence boundaries, especially in longer sentences.
