Student answer (Band 5.5)

The given graps depics the number of participants who participated in different activities at a social center in Melbourne, Australia in between years 2000 - 2020. Its clear that some activities were consistant in the number of participants, some declined with time and some became more popular among participants.

Film club was the activity which had the maximum number of participants throughout the period, it has touched to a maximum of 70 in the year 2020. Also material art was too like film club i.e., almost constant number of participants ranging between 30 to 40. Musical performances were not introduced till the year 2005 and reached to 55 in 2020.

The amature dramatics and table tennis had a almost same start with arround 20 participants in 2000 but both followed a different trijectory. The number of participants increased rapidly in table tennis from the year 2010 reaching a maximum of 50 in the year 2020 whereas amature dramatics saw a decline in number from the same year and fallen to below 10 in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the main broad patterns: film club remains the most popular, table tennis rises, and amateur dramatics declines. However, several figures are substantially misreported, which weakens the accuracy of the summary. Film club reaches about 66, not 70, and musical performances rise only to around 18, not 55; they begin in 2010 rather than being introduced after 2005. The opening overview is useful but general, and the comparison between amateur dramatics and table tennis gives an inaccurate starting point: they begin at about 26 and 16 respectively, not at roughly the same level. To strengthen the report, check key values against the graph and include a clearer overview of the contrasting trends and final rankings.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by paragraphs describing the activities and their trends. Comparisons such as “both followed a different trajectory” help connect related information, and the reader can generally follow the account. However, the grouping is not always effective: the second paragraph combines film club, martial arts and musical performances, while the final paragraph compares table tennis with amateur dramatics. Some links are also awkward or unclear, as in “Also material art was too like film club i.e.” Use more precise transitions and organise the details by contrasting trends—for example, stable activities together, then the rising and falling series. This would make the progression more deliberate and the comparisons easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “declined,” “constant,” “increased rapidly” and “trajectory,” so the main trends are usually understandable. However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable, including “graps,” “depics,” “consistant,” “amature” and “trijectory.” Some expressions are also imprecise or unnatural: “touched to a maximum” and “material art” do not clearly describe the chart categories, while “introduced” is less suitable than saying the series first recorded participants. Aim for accurate chart terminology and natural collocations, and proofread spelling carefully. More precise verbs such as “peaked,” “remained stable” and “rose steadily” would help you describe changes clearly without relying on vague phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including the contrast in “whereas amateur dramatics saw a decline,” and most of the meaning remains understandable. Some grammatical errors recur, however. For example, “it has touched” shifts tense in a report about past data, and “the number … increased … reaching” is not smoothly formed. Articles and agreement are also problematic in “had a almost same start” and “the number … and fallen.” The opening sentence contains an awkward time construction, “in between years 2000 - 2020.” Use the past simple consistently for the period, check article use, and make sure each clause has a complete, correctly formed verb. These corrections would improve accuracy while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
