Student answer (Band 6.5)

The given graph illustrates the number of participants for distinct activities such as: film club, martial arts, amateur dramatics, table tennis and musical performances at a social center situtated in Melbourne, Australia for the period of 2000 to 2020.

Overall, the highest number of participants recorded were for film club compared to other activites. A declining graph was observed for ameatuer dramatics in the span of 20 years. Martial arts remained stagnant throughout whilst, incline was noticed for table tennis and musical performances.

From 2000 to 2020, participation rate for film club remained the highest and consistent around 65 people each year. Stable graph was noticed with neglible fluctuation in martial arts where it was initially around 37 people and reached till 40 participants by 2010 but eventually in 2020 it was recorded as the initial rate. The only category which had a decline overall was amateur dramatics at first it around 27 participants increased to 30 in a span of 5 year but later a significant decline was noticed and by the last year recorded it was approximately 5 people. Musical performance category gradually increased from 0 to approximately 15 particpants in a span of two decades. A considerable rise was observed for table tennis by 2000 to 2010 it slowly increased from 15 to 20 participants but a spike was noticed thereafter, and by the end of it 60 particpants were recorded for the same category.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response identifies the main patterns accurately: film club remains the largest category, amateur dramatics falls substantially, and table tennis and musical performances rise. It also includes useful comparisons and supporting figures, such as amateur dramatics ending at about five participants and table tennis increasing sharply. The overview is clear, although “Martial arts remained stagnant” slightly overstates the pattern: its figures fluctuate around the mid-30s rather than staying unchanged. There are also a few imprecise details, including table tennis reaching about 54 rather than 60, and film club varying from roughly 60 to 66 rather than staying consistently near 65. More precise reporting of these changes would strengthen an otherwise well-selected account.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a summary of the main trends, and a final paragraph with details. The progression from the overview to individual activities is easy to follow, and time markers such as “by 2010” and “by the end” help orient the reader. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent overall arrangement, with some evidence of more flexible organisation. However, several details are crowded into one long paragraph, and links between trends can feel mechanical. For example, “The only category which had a decline overall was amateur dramatics at first…” runs several stages together. Separate the series into clearer groups and use more precise referencing so each comparison is easier to track.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

There is adequate vocabulary for describing the graph, including “significant decline,” “gradually increased,” “considerable rise,” and “fluctuation.” These choices communicate the main trends, and the response attempts some less common descriptive language. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “a declining graph was observed,” “stable graph was noticed,” and “reached till 40” are not natural ways to describe data. Spelling errors such as “situtated,” “ameatuer,” “neglible,” and “particpants” also reduce accuracy. Use standard chart language such as “the figure declined,” “remained relatively stable,” and “rose to,” and check spelling carefully to make the vocabulary more precise and controlled.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response attempts a mix of simple and more complex structures, including contrast with “whilst” and time clauses such as “by the end of it.” Meaning is generally recoverable, but some sentence structures are incomplete or poorly controlled. For example, “at first it around 27 participants increased to 30” is missing a verb and has an unclear clause structure; “by 2000 to 2010 it slowly increased” also uses an awkward time construction. There are issues with articles and sentence boundaries, as in “A declining graph was observed…” and the long sentence beginning “Stable graph was noticed…”. Build shorter, complete sentences and check that each clause has a clear subject and verb. More accurate complex sentences would improve control.
