Student answer (Band 5.0)

The illustrated graph shows number of participants involved in different activites at a social center in Meulbourne over time span of twenty years. In 2000 around sixty to seventy people participated in film club and till 2020 the number of participants remained in same range. People involved in martial arts were from thirty to fourty in 2000s and this figure remained same untill year 2020. There twenty five to thirty participants in amateur dramatics from 2000 to 2005 but this figured decreased in 2010 when number number reached below twenty and in year 2020 only ten participants remained in dramatics. In table tennis there were fifteen to twenty participants in 2000 and this figure remained till year 2010 but after that participants dropped below than ten reaching to five in 2020. At last in musical performances there were no participants untill 2010 only ten people participated which then increased to twenty in year 2020. These variations across the years show that interests of people change with the time as film club remained most popular among people over whole time span, the interest in dramatics shifted which in result decreased in the same timeline and music start catching attention almost after a decade.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response identifies all five activities and notes several broad patterns, including film club’s continued popularity, the decline in amateur dramatics, and the later emergence of musical performances. However, it only minimally fulfils the task because key trends are misreported: table tennis rose sharply after 2010, reaching about 54 in 2020, rather than falling to five; musical performances increased to about 18, not 20; and amateur dramatics ended at about six, not ten. The overview also misses table tennis’s major rise, one of the graph’s most important features. Focus on accurate comparisons and summarise the main upward, downward and stable trends rather than adding a general claim about changing interests.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The activities are presented in a generally understandable sequence, and time markers such as “in 2000,” “after that” and “in year 2020” help the reader follow the account. However, the response is one continuous paragraph, so the overview and supporting details are not clearly separated. Progression is also weakened by repetitive sentence openings and linking phrases such as “At last,” while the final sentence combines several conclusions without clearly distinguishing them. Grouping the information into an overview followed by paragraphs for contrasting trends would make the organisation clearer. Use linking expressions to show comparisons between series, not simply to move from one activity to the next.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The response uses enough topic vocabulary to identify the activities and describe change, including “participants,” “remained,” “decreased” and “increased.” However, the range is limited and some choices are inaccurate or awkward, which reduces precision: “participants dropped below than ten” misstates the table-tennis trend, and “music start catching attention” is an informal, unclear way to describe the rise in musical performances. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “activites,” “Meulbourne,” “fourty” and “untill.” Use precise trend language such as “rose sharply,” “fluctuated” and “declined steadily,” and check spelling and collocations before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts to connect ideas in longer sentences, for example with “but,” “when” and “which,” and the general meaning is usually recoverable. However, the range of structures is limited, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences awkward or unclear. Examples include “There twenty five to thirty participants,” which lacks a verb, “this figured decreased,” and “music start catching attention,” where the verb form does not fit the past-time account. The final sentence also runs several ideas together without effective punctuation. Practise accurate past-tense reporting and build shorter, complete sentences before combining them with subordinate clauses.
