Student answer (Band 6.0)

The graph illustrates the data of several participants involving in several social work activities in a city of Australia over a period of 20 years between 2000 and 2020. The activities are film club, martial art, amateur dramatics, table tennis, music performances in Melbourne.

Overall, the major contribution was given by film club and it stayed almost same throughout the period by starting from almost 65 in 2000, drooped down to 60 in 2010 and again reached at 65 in last year. Another significant proportion was taken by table tennis, while starting from almost 16.5 in first year, rose to just 20 in next decade but than increase dramatically to about 55 in 2020 by overtaking amateur and martial arts.

Another main feature is musical performances, that started from 2005 instead of 2000 from almost zero but rose sharply and reached to almost 17 in last year.

Moreover, same as film club martial art ended at the numbers from where it had started. But it undergoes several fluctuations over the period, in the first half it decreased down from 37 to 31 almost, while after one decade it again rose to 38 approximately, fluctuated again and reached exactly at 37 in 2020.

The most important figures were taken by Amateur dramatics which observerd a sharp decline from just below 30 in 2005 and went down to almost 6 which is the lowest among all in final year.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main overall patterns: film-club attendance remains high and broadly stable, table tennis rises markedly, and amateur dramatics declines to the lowest final figure. The overview also notes that table tennis overtakes the other activities, which is a useful comparison. Most reported figures and trends are consistent with the chart. However, the account is not fully precise: musical performances begin in 2000 at zero, rather than starting in 2005, and the description of table tennis as rising to 20 “in next decade” obscures that it is already at 20 in 2005 and remains there in 2010. The final paragraph also calls amateur dramatics the “most important” figures, which is unclear. More accurate staging and clearer selection of key comparisons would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement, with an opening, an overview and separate discussion of several activities. The reader can follow the broad progression from stable film-club numbers to the sharp rise in table tennis and decline in amateur dramatics. However, the organisation is somewhat list-like: each paragraph introduces another series without consistently grouping related trends or making comparisons across the same years. Some linking is mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “Moreover” and “Another main feature.” References such as “last year,” “next decade” and “the first half” are not always precise, and the musical-performances paragraph interrupts the comparison of the other series. Grouping the rising and falling activities and using clearer time references would improve progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of trend vocabulary, including “fluctuations,” “decline,” “rose sharply” and “overtaking,” which helps communicate the main movements. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “data of several participants involving in several social work activities,” “major contribution,” and “reached at.” “The most important figures were taken by Amateur dramatics” is also unclear and does not express the intended trend precisely. There are spelling and form errors, including “drooped” and “observerd,” and some repetition of general terms such as “almost” and “reached.” Aim for standard chart language and check spelling and collocations so that your otherwise relevant vocabulary is consistently clear.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including clauses beginning “while” and “which,” and most of the trends remain understandable. However, some sentence structures are faulty or incomplete. For example, “Another significant proportion was taken by table tennis, while starting from…” leaves the relationship between the clauses unclear, and “Another main feature is musical performances, that started…” has an awkward relative-clause construction. There are also errors in articles, prepositions and verb forms, as in “reached at 65,” “it undergoes several fluctuations,” and “in last year.” These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the overall account, but they limit accuracy. Use complete clauses and maintain consistent past-tense reporting.
