Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
You identify the chart’s subject and make a relevant comparison between the beginning and end of the period. However, the report is substantially incomplete: it contains fewer than the required 150 words, and most of the main trends are not described. The overview says table tennis and amateur dramatics were among the lowest in 2000, which is broadly accurate, and notes that film club remained highest in 2020. But it incorrectly groups musical performances with amateur dramatics as having the lowest participation in 2020; musical performances rose to about 18, while amateur dramatics fell to about 6. The final paragraph covers only film club and martial arts in the first decade. Include the major rises and falls, with comparisons across the full period, to address the task more fully.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic, understandable structure: an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph with selected figures. The opening phrase “Generally” signals an overview, while “Additionally” and “Over a 10-year period” help indicate how the information is being organised. However, the progression is limited because the final paragraph stops after discussing two activities and does not develop a complete account of the chart. The overview also combines unlike trends, making the comparison less clear. Use separate paragraphs to group the main patterns—for example, relatively stable activities, rising activities, and the declining activity—and use clear links between these groups. This would create a more complete and logically connected report.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant chart vocabulary, including “taking part,” “participants,” “dominant,” and “remain,” and the reader can generally understand the topic. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “experienced lowest entries,” but this collocation is unnatural and obscures the intended meaning. “Leading sources of energy” is not appropriate for participation figures, and “least participated events” is awkward. Spelling errors such as “indviduals” and “particpitants” also reduce accuracy. Choose precise terms for numbers and trends, such as “participant numbers,” “had the highest participation,” “declined,” and “rose steadily.” A wider set of accurate trend verbs would help you describe all five activities clearly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple statements and more developed sentences, including the contrast introduced by “while” and the time phrase “Over a 10-year period, starting at 2000.” The main ideas remain understandable, but errors in agreement and verb forms are noticeable. For example, “film club were” should be “the film club was,” and “film club remain” should be “the film club remained.” The phrase “at social centre” also needs an article: “at a social centre.” In the final sentence, the construction “remain the same from around 65 to about 62” is grammatically unclear; use a verb such as “fell” to describe the change. Check subject–verb agreement, articles, and past-tense consistency when revising.
