Student answer (Band 6.0)

The graph provides the data on the number of people who took part in various types of activities at Melbourne social centre from 2000 to 2020.

Overall, it can be seen that the film club was the most popular activity among people attracting almost the same number of more than 60 participants every year. Also, the graph shows that the figures for martial arts fluctuated in the given period achieving their maximum of 38 participants in 2010. Other activities demonstrated either the growth in popularity (such as table tennis and musical performances) or the significant fall (such as amateur dramatics)

The graph shows that musical performances were introduced to the social center in 2005. Then their popularity rose slightly to 19 participants in 2005. Moreover, the number of people who played table tennis increased rapidly from 20 participants in 2010 to 53 participants in the final year. However, figures for amateur dramatics shown moderate fall from 28 in 2005 to 7 in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main overall patterns: the film club remains the most popular, table tennis rises strongly, and amateur dramatics declines. You also give useful figures for martial arts and table tennis. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear. Musical performances began in 2010, not 2005, and their figure rose to about 18 by 2020; the claim that they reached 19 in 2005 conflicts with the chart. The overview could also be more complete by noting that table tennis became the second-largest activity by 2020. Several series receive little or no specific reporting, particularly the film club’s slight changes. More accurate selection and fuller coverage of the key comparisons would strengthen the summary.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear basic structure: an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph of selected details. The overview helps the reader understand the broad trends before the figures are discussed, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Moreover,” and “However” signal relationships between points. However, the final paragraph moves between musical performances, table tennis, and amateur dramatics without a particularly clear grouping, and the musical-performance dates make the progression difficult to follow. Some linking is also mechanical, with “Moreover” introducing another data point rather than a meaningful extension. Grouping rising activities together and declining or fluctuating activities separately, while using clearer references, would make the progression more controlled.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “fluctuated,” “popularity,” “increased rapidly,” and “significant fall,” which helps describe trends. Meaning is generally clear, but some word choices and collocations are awkward: “provides the data on” is less natural than “shows the number of,” and “achieving their maximum” would be better expressed as “peaking at.” “The growth in popularity” and “figures … shown moderate fall” also lack natural phrasing. There are spelling inconsistencies in “centre” and “center”; choose one form and use it consistently. More precise trend language and natural collocations would improve the fluency and accuracy of your vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including the overview sentence contrasting activities that grew with those that declined. Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors are noticeable. For example, “at Melbourne social centre” needs an article, and “figures for amateur dramatics shown moderate fall” is missing a finite verb and an article; write “the figure … showed a moderate fall.” In “their popularity rose slightly to 19 participants in 2005,” the tense and time reference are also confusing, although the underlying date is a factual issue. The final overview sentence needs a full stop. Greater control of articles, verb forms, and sentence boundaries, alongside continued use of varied structures, would make the writing more accurate.
