Student answer (Band 5.0)
The line chart illustrates how many participants taking part in different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia during the period from 2000 to 2010.
Overall, amateur dramatics was the only activity saw significantly decreases in the figure of attendance whereas this trend was true opposite for the rest. Notably, film club consistently the most attendance's figures throughout the period. In addition, despite having relatively higher rate, amature dramatics was respectively surpassed by musical performance and table tennis.
Looking first at film club and martial arts, the former commenced with well above 60 participants in 2000, which was about nearly 30 participants higher than that of the latter. Thereafter, despite having fluctuation in rates in the next five years and record a dip of nearly 60 in 2010, film club bounced back and reached the highest rate, roughly 70 participants at the end. Following the similar upward trend but at varied rates, a fluctuation rates can be observed in martial arts, ending at around 40 participants, passing through a higher rate in 2010, with 40 attendees.
Regarding the remaining activities, athough amateur dramatics was a popular activity with nearly 30 attendees in 2000, its figure consistently decreased and end up at well under 10 participants and become the least favorable option. By contrast, there was a dramatically increase in table tennis, having around 15 participants in initial year, overlooking amateur dramatics and martial arts to calm its second spot, ignoring matched figures with these activities. Musical performances saw a steady increase despite having no attendees during 2000 and 2005, showing 20 participants in the end.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify several important patterns, including the decline in amateur dramatics, the rise in table tennis, and film club’s position as the most popular activity. However, the opening says the chart covers 2000–2010, although it runs to 2020, and some key comparisons are inaccurate or unclear. For example, table tennis overtakes martial arts by 2020, but it does not reach “its second spot” clearly across the period; musical performances end at about 18, not 20, and film club finishes near 66 rather than 70. The overview also says the other activities all increased, although martial arts fluctuated around a similar level. Report the full period and distinguish steady trends from fluctuations.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs grouping the activities. Phrases such as “Looking first” and “Regarding the remaining activities” help signal these sections. However, progression within sentences is sometimes difficult to follow, particularly in the table-tennis description: “overlooking amateur dramatics and martial arts to calm its second spot, ignoring matched figures with these activities.” These links do not clearly explain the comparisons. The overview also combines several trends in a long sentence, making the relationships less clear. Use direct comparisons and organise each body paragraph around a clear pattern—for example, stable/high figures versus rising or falling figures—while ensuring each linking phrase accurately expresses the relationship.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You attempt a range of trend vocabulary, including “commenced,” “bounced back,” “fluctuation,” and “steady increase,” and the activity categories are generally identifiable. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward enough to make parts of the report difficult to interpret. Examples include “the most attendance’s figures,” “a dramatically increase,” “calm its second spot,” and “ignoring matched figures.” “Amature” and “athough” are also misspelled. Prefer precise chart language such as “participant numbers,” “rose sharply,” “ranked second,” and “was level with.” Reusing a smaller set of accurate verbs and nouns would communicate the trends more reliably than attempting expressions whose meanings do not fit.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt complex sentences with clauses and comparisons, for example, “despite having no attendees during 2000 and 2005,” but grammatical control is inconsistent, and errors occur frequently enough to affect clarity. The overview contains “the only activity saw significantly decreases,” which needs a relative clause and a correctly formed verb phrase. Other examples include “film club consistently the most attendance’s figures” and “its figure consistently decreased and end up,” where the verb forms and sentence structure are faulty. There are also problems with articles, agreement, and countable forms. Practise building accurate simple trend sentences first, then combine them with clauses using “while,” “whereas,” or “although.” Check that each sentence has a clear subject and a correctly conjugated verb.
