Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given line chart represents the numbers of people joined in various activities, happened at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia between 2000 and 2020.
Overall, Film club remained at top, with the highest numbers of joining. While Martial arts showed many ups and down over the years, and Table tennis made a dramatical increase, among all other activities. Whereas Amateur dramatics and Musical performances illustrated their gradual decline over the period.
At the starting of 2000, Film club had the highest numbers of participants, around 65. However, it decreased to 60 in 2010, and afterwards, the numbers were increased again, at 65 in 2020. While Martial arts numbers were fluctuated between 30 to 40 over the period from 2000 to 2020.
Amateur dramatics and Musical performances performed similiarly, because both the activities were decreased until 2020. At the starting, the numbers were around 25 for amateur dramatics and 0 for Musical performances. Eventually, it decreased upto only 5 and 18 respectively in 2020.
Table tennis is the only acitivity, which has noticeable growth. At first, only around 15 people joined to play tennis, and after ten years it remain quite stable, but later, the acitivity accounted highest dramtical increase in the graph, ending with nearly above 50 people in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main overall pattern that the film club remained the most popular activity and that table tennis rose substantially, and you include relevant figures at the beginning and end of the period. However, the overview contains a significant misreading: musical performances increased from zero to 18, rather than declining, and amateur dramatics fell sharply rather than gradually. The body also says the two activities behaved similarly, which obscures their contrasting trends. Your account of martial arts as fluctuating and film club’s dip and recovery is broadly accurate, though the comparisons could be more precise. This covers the main task, but some key features are less fully and accurately reported; a clearer overview and more selective comparisons would strengthen it.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs describing the activities. The progression from the leading activities to the declining and rising series is generally easy to follow, and time markers such as “At the starting of 2000” and “in 2020” help orient the reader. However, the overview’s “Whereas” fragment is not smoothly connected to the preceding sentence, and “Amateur dramatics and Musical performances performed similarly” creates a confusing link because their trends differ. Repeated use of “While” and “At the starting” also makes some transitions mechanical. Grouping the contrasting trends more clearly and using accurate references between sentences would make the organisation more cohesive.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “participants,” “fluctuated,” “remained,” and “noticeable growth,” so the main information is usually understandable. However, several inaccurate or unnatural choices limit precision: “numbers of people joined,” “numbers of joining,” and “performed similarly” do not express the intended ideas naturally. There are also spelling errors in “similiarly,” “acitivity,” and “dramtical,” while “dramatical increase” is an awkward collocation. Some repetition of “numbers” and “activity” could also be reduced. Aim for standard chart language such as “the number of participants,” “rose sharply,” and “declined,” and check spelling and word forms carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “while” and “because,” and the overall meaning is generally recoverable. However, some sentence structures are incomplete or awkwardly joined. For example, “Whereas Amateur dramatics and Musical performances illustrated their gradual decline over the period” is a dependent clause standing alone, and “While Martial arts numbers were fluctuated” combines a passive form incorrectly. There are also errors in tense and agreement, as in “after ten years it remain quite stable” and “the numbers were increased again.” Articles and prepositions are sometimes missing or unsuitable, as in “At the starting of 2000.” Use complete clauses and consistent past-tense forms, while retaining a mix of sentence patterns.
