Student answer (Band 6.0)
The line graph illustrates the participant numbers for various activities in a social center of Melbourne, Australia, from 2000 to 2020.
Overall, the film club became a leading sector, while the amateur dramatics showed a significant decline in the participant numbers over the period.Similarly, table tennis recorded a dramatic increase in the number of attendees.
In 2000, the film club recorded 50 individuals and these numbers remained unchange in 2020. However, table tennis had the lowest participant count of 15 in 2000, which increased slightly to 20 in 2010 before rising sharply to more than 50 people. Similarly, the total number of people taking part in the amateur dramatics in 2000 were 25, which fell around 20 in 2000 and remained only one participant in 2020.
The other most noticeable change came in the musical performance category. Initially, it had no participant in 2000, whereas it took a major turn in 2005 with a gradual increase in the number of people and represented more than 10 individuals in 2020. However, martial arts started with 35 individuals and remained plateauted till 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify several important patterns, including the sharp rise in table tennis and the decline in amateur dramatics, and your overview gives the reader a useful sense of the main changes. However, some key figures and trends are inaccurate: film club participation was about 64 in 2000 and 66 in 2020, not 50 in both years; amateur dramatics fell to about 6, not one, and its fall was gradual rather than reaching around 20 in 2000. Musical performances began increasing in 2010, not 2005, and martial arts fluctuated rather than remaining level. These inaccuracies and the limited coverage of comparisons make the report only partly complete. Check each series against the graph before summarising it.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing the figures. The overview appropriately highlights the contrasting directions of table tennis and amateur dramatics. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “However,” and “Similarly” help connect points, but some are used where the relationship is not clear or accurate. For example, “Similarly” introduces the table-tennis increase after the film-club trend, although these are contrasting patterns, and “However” before martial arts does not establish a meaningful contrast. The final paragraph also combines two activities without a clear comparison. Grouping the rising or stable series together and using links that express the precise relationship would make progression more controlled.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “participant numbers,” “significant decline,” “dramatic increase,” and “gradual increase.” These choices communicate the general trends, and the meaning is usually clear. Some expressions are imprecise or awkward, however: “leading sector” is not a natural way to describe the most popular activity, “took a major turn” does not clearly describe the start of an upward trend, and “remained plateauted” is an inaccurate form. “Participant count” and “attendees” are understandable, but consistent use of “participants” would suit the chart more precisely. Aim for accurate trend language and natural collocations rather than adding emphatic wording.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast clause with “whereas” and a relative clause in “which increased slightly to 20 in 2010.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors reduce accuracy. In “these numbers remained unchange,” the verb form is incorrect; “the total number … were” has a subject–verb agreement error; and “remained plateauted till 2020” is not grammatically formed. The sentence about amateur dramatics also repeats “in 2000,” making the time sequence unclear. There is a missing space after the full stop following “period.” Review verb forms, agreement, and sentence punctuation, while retaining the range of structures you already attempt.
