IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graph below gives information on the numbers of participants for different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia for the period 2000 to 2020.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given graph outlines the amount of participants for separate activities at a particular social centre located in Melbourne, Australia between 2000 to 2020.
Overall, the amount of participants rose for three types of activities over the period. Film club remained to be the leader throughout, while musical performances did not have any participants initially but gradually increased over the years.
In 2000, around eighteen students participated in table tennis with a slight increase until 2005, however, between 2010 and 2020 it surged dramatically falling just behind film club. The amatuer dramatics gained a bit of popularity up until 2005, although, it drastically declined afterwards.
By contrast, musical performance took off only after 2005 and gradually grew its participants, still falling behind majority of the activities. On the other hand, the amount of participants in martial arts only fluctuated around thirty to fourty participants. The film club started with the highest number of participants throughout the years before reaching its peak in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main patterns: film club stays highest, table tennis rises sharply, amateur dramatics declines, and musical performances begin later and grow. These are relevant features and your overview gives the reader a useful summary. Some details, however, are incomplete or imprecise. Table tennis rises from about 16 to 20 by 2005, then remains around 20 in 2010 before climbing to 54; saying it surged “between 2010 and 2020” misses the earlier plateau and the scale of the final rise. Musical performances reach 18, but the claim that they remain behind “the majority” is not accurate in 2020, when they exceed amateur dramatics. Include clearer endpoint comparisons and report the main changes more precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and two detail paragraphs. The main trends are grouped sensibly, and linking expressions such as “Overall” and “By contrast” help signal relationships. However, some connections are awkward or unclear. The table-tennis sentence combines a rise to 2005 with a later surge using “however,” but does not clearly distinguish the stable period around 2010 from the subsequent increase. “On the other hand” introduces martial arts, although this is not a direct contrast with musical performances. The final sentence repeats the film-club overview rather than adding a useful comparison. More precise sequencing and links between related series would make the progression smoother.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing trends, including “gradually increased,” “fluctuated,” “declined,” and “peak.” These choices make the broad patterns understandable, and “surged dramatically” conveys the strong growth in table tennis. Some word choices and collocations are less natural or precise: “amount of participants” is better expressed as “number of participants,” and “took off only after 2005” is informal for an academic report. “Falling just behind film club” is also imprecise because table tennis remains below film club by a substantial margin in 2020. Check spelling, too: “amatuer” and “fourty” should be “amateur” and “forty.” More exact trend language would strengthen the report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including a relative clause in “which did not have any participants initially” and contrast clauses with “while” and “although.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical choices are inaccurate. In the opening, use “between 2000 and 2020,” rather than “between 2000 to 2020.” The sentence beginning “In 2000” joins two independent clauses with a comma before “however”; use a full stop or a semicolon, and set “however” off with appropriate punctuation. In “the amount of participants … surged dramatically falling,” the participle construction is unclear. Also, “the film club started with the highest number … throughout the years” mixes a starting point with the whole period. Clearer sentence boundaries and more controlled phrasing would improve accuracy.
