Student answer (Band 6.0)

The graph depicts data about how many people participate at social centre held in Melbourne, Australia and show involvement in various activities between 2000 to 2020.

Overall, Film club being the highest, experienced maximum number of participants followed by Martial arts that shows fluctuations over the period of time. A dramatic surge occurs in Table tennis while musical performance shows a slight change.

As far as Film club is concerned, it experienced a slight change over the period of time from approximately 63 participants in 2000 to 64 participants in 2020. It is followed by Martial arts in which participant numbers remains the same between 2000 to 2020, despite having some fluctuations.

A dramatic decrease occured in Amateur dramatics from approximately 26 participants to 9 participants over the period of time. Furthermore, Table tennis experienced a surge in participant numbers from approximately 17 to 51 with the passage of time. The figure for table tennis and Martial arts were equal at approximately 35 participants in 2015. Moreover, in 2005 the number of people participated rose from 0 to 14 for the Musical performance and it intersected the Amateurs dramatic at approximately 15 participants in 2014.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main overall pattern: the film club remains the largest activity, table tennis rises markedly, and amateur dramatics declines. You also include useful comparisons, such as table tennis and martial arts reaching similar levels in 2015. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: film-club participation rises from about 64 to 66, rather than 63 to 64; amateur dramatics falls to about 6, not 9; and musical performances begin in 2010, not 2005. The claim that musical performances intersect amateur dramatics in 2014 is also unsupported by the chart. The overview is relevant, but it would be stronger with the key contrast that table tennis becomes the second-largest activity by 2020.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction and overview to descriptions of the individual activities. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Furthermore,” and “Moreover” help signal relationships between points. However, the organisation is not always fully clear: the overview says martial arts “shows fluctuations,” while the next paragraph says its numbers “remains the same,” which can seem contradictory without explaining that it ends near its starting point. The final sentence combines the musical-performance trend with an intersection claim, making the information harder to follow. Grouping the series by contrasting trends—for example, stable/high figures, rising figures, and declining figures—would create clearer progression and make comparisons easier to track.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “participants,” “fluctuations,” “surge,” and “dramatic decrease,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts to vary wording rather than repeat “number” throughout. Some choices are imprecise or awkward, however: “social centre held in Melbourne” does not naturally describe the centre, and “a slight change” understates the film club’s pattern while failing to specify its rise after 2010. “The number of people participated” is not a natural phrase, and “Amateurs dramatic” is an inaccurate label for the activity. Aim for precise chart language such as “the centre’s activities,” “participation,” and the exact activity names; this will make comparisons more natural and reliable.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex forms, including the overview sentence beginning “Overall” and clauses introduced by “despite” and “while.” The main trends remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “the graph … show” needs subject–verb agreement (“shows”), and “participant numbers remains” should be “participant numbers remain.” The opening phrase “between 2000 to 2020” uses the wrong preposition pattern; use “between 2000 and 2020.” There are also sentence-construction problems in “the number of people participated rose,” where a relative clause or noun phrase is needed. Check agreement, verb forms, and prepositions carefully, and simplify sentences when combining several trends leads to errors.
