Student answer (Band 6.0)
The line graph illustrates the numbers of participants for five different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia for the period 2000 to 2020.
Overall, there has been a fluctuating trend. The film club have had the highest number of participants throughout the years while second highest was martial arts which remained steady with a few inconsistencies. The participants in Amateur dramatics increased before declinining steadily while table tennis participation rose exponentially whereas people started enrolling in musical performances from 2005 and a sharp increase can be seen.
The highest participation is in film club with 65 participants in 2000 and it remained steady till 2020 with more or less the same enrollment number. The martial artsstarted with 38 participants and had the same steady trend as film club. Table tennis rose from 18 participants in 2000 to 53 participants in 2020, marking the highest increase, with a 35 point. The increase started in 2010.
Moreover, Amateur dramatics started with 28 participants however after 2005, there was a sharp decline and the number fell to 5 participants by 2020. There were no enrollments in musical performances until 2005 which increased to 18 participants by 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main series and provide an overview, noting that film club participation was highest and that table tennis rose while amateur dramatics declined. Several key comparisons are supported with figures, including table tennis’s increase to about 53 and amateur dramatics’ fall to around 5. This meets the task well, with some features developed more fully than others. However, the overview says amateur dramatics increased before declining, although the chart shows only a small rise to 2005 before a sustained fall; musical performances began in 2010, not 2005. Film club was broadly stable but rose slightly overall, rather than remaining unchanged. More precise reporting of these trends and the starting points would strengthen the response further.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs presenting details. The grouping of film club, martial arts and table tennis before discussing amateur dramatics and musical performances gives the reader a workable progression. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, “Moreover” does not clearly signal the relationship between the final paragraph and the preceding one, and “The increase started in 2010” has an unclear reference because table tennis had already risen before then. The overview also packs several trends into one long sentence, making the comparisons harder to follow. Use clearer links and organise each detail paragraph around a distinct comparison or trend.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “fluctuating trend,” “sharp decline,” “participation,” and “enrollment,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more descriptive language, such as “rose exponentially,” although this overstates the chart’s pattern, which is a substantial rise rather than an exponential one. Some word choices and collocations are imprecise: “with a 35 point” is incomplete, and “people started enrolling in musical performances” is less natural for describing participant numbers. There are spelling and form slips, including “declinining” and “enrollment number.” Aim for precise, neutral chart language and check spelling and collocations before finishing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses with “while,” “whereas,” and “however,” and most sentences communicate the intended meaning. Some grammatical errors remain. In “The film club have had,” the singular subject requires “has”; “the martial artsstarted” needs a space and a more complete grammatical construction; and “with a 35 point” lacks a suitable noun phrase, such as “an increase of 35 participants.” The sentence beginning “The highest participation is in film club” also shifts into the present tense when describing past data. Review subject–verb agreement, tense consistency, and sentence punctuation, while retaining your attempts to combine comparisons in complex sentences.
