Student answer (Band 5.5)

The graph represent the detail about the how many players were involved in different games, in the time span of 20 years.

The highest number of participants were recorded in the film club, with almost 68 actors in 2020. Whereas, the lowest figure occured in the area of amateur dramatics, with the number of 6 volunteers. In the same way, the most of the participants were also seen in film club in 2000, but the only musical performnaces had no singer in its first year.

Moreover, the table tennis shows a dramatic continuous rise in players after 2010 and likewise, there was significant fall in the amateur dramatics activity in same year. In addition, the musicians were gradually increased after 2005, with 0 particiapants in first 5 year of activity. However, there were noticeable peaks and troughs in the figure of martial arts players.

Overall, the there are different kind of trends seen in all five activities. But the film club has totally different start and end in terms of volunteers.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify several important features, including the film club’s leading position, the decline in amateur dramatics, table tennis’s strong later rise, and the absence of musical-performance participants at the start. However, the report only partly summarises the graph: it gives few accurate figures and does not clearly compare the activities across the period. The film club reaches about 66 in 2020, rather than “almost 68,” and its level changes only slightly overall. The claim that it has a “totally different start and end” is unclear and does not describe the data. The overview also says there are different trends without specifying the main contrast between broadly stable film club and martial arts figures and the sharply diverging table tennis and amateur dramatics trends. Select key comparisons and support them with accurate values.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: it introduces the graph, groups several observations in the middle, and ends with a general overview. Linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “In addition,” and “However” help signal relationships between points. However, progression is not always clear because observations are presented as a list rather than organised into meaningful comparisons. For example, the film club and amateur dramatics figures are mentioned together, but their contrasting trends are not developed. The final sentence, “the film club has totally different start and end,” is difficult to connect to the preceding overview. Use a clearer overview paragraph and group related series—for instance, stable activities together and the rising and falling activities together. Some transitions also feel mechanical rather than showing a precise relationship.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant vocabulary for describing data, including “dramatic continuous rise,” “significant fall,” and “peaks and troughs.” These attempts show awareness of the language needed for a graph report. However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or imprecise: participants are called “players,” “actors,” “volunteers,” and “singer,” although the chart reports participants in activities. “The musicians were gradually increased” also uses an unsuitable expression for the trend. Spelling errors such as “occured,” “performnaces,” and “particiapants” further reduce accuracy. Aim for consistent, neutral terms such as “participants” and “the number rose/fell,” and check spelling carefully. More precise trend vocabulary would help distinguish a slight fluctuation from a substantial change.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts a mixture of simple statements and longer sentences, including clauses introduced by “whereas” and “with.” However, grammatical control is limited, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences awkward or unclear. Examples include “The graph represent” (subject–verb agreement), “the detail about the how many players” (article and clause structure), and “the musicians were gradually increased” (incorrect verb construction). The final overview, “Overall, the there are different kind of trends,” contains errors in article use, agreement, and number. Practise building accurate basic sentences first, then add subordinate clauses. For example, write “The number of participants in musical performances rose gradually after 2005” rather than using a passive construction. Check agreement, articles, and singular/plural forms during proofreading.
