Student answer (Band 5.5)
The given graph illustrates five types of activities undertaken by a number of participants at a social centre in Melboune, Australia over the years from 2000 to 2020.
Overall, all the activities have seen adoption at a considerable pace. However, one of the activities have seen an exponential surge in participation, while the others considerably have seen a similar trend or remained stable. And one of the activities has seen a sharp decline moving forward.
The table tennis activity peaked at a much faster pace than the rest and participation increased from 15 in the beginning of year 2000 to approximately 53 in the year 2020. Whereas, martial arts activity remained stable with 36 participants in the beginning and same at the end in 2020. Film club on the other hand also followed a similar trend with 63 participants in the beginning of the year 2020 and 64 at the end in 2020.Inspite of this, the film club remains as the highest with regards to number of participation. Musical performance has seen a decent improvement throughout starting late in the year 2005 and seeing a growth tenfolds. Amateur dramatics has seen a surprisingly a sharp decline.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify several important patterns: table tennis rises strongly, film club remains the largest activity, and amateur dramatics declines. Some figures are also broadly accurate, such as martial arts beginning and ending at about 36. However, the overview is unclear and partly inaccurate: “all the activities have seen adoption” does not fit martial arts, which fluctuates around a similar level, or amateur dramatics, which falls. The film-club comparison gives the wrong starting year and value (“63 participants in the beginning of the year 2020”), and the claim that musical performances grew “tenfolds” is not a clear or accurate summary of its rise from zero. Develop the overview around the contrasting major trends and report key values consistently.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic structure, moving from an introduction and overview to comparisons of individual activities. This gives the reader some sense of how the information is organised. However, progression is weakened by an overview that lists several vague or conflicting claims, followed by a dense paragraph that shifts between series without clear grouping. Connectors such as “However,” “Whereas,” and “Inspite of this” are not always used to show a logical relationship, and “Whereas” begins a fragment rather than a complete comparison. Separate the main trends into clearer groups—for example, rising activities and those that were stable or declined—and use linking phrases only where the relationship is clear.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You attempt a range of vocabulary suited to describing change, including “surge,” “remained stable,” “sharp decline,” and “improvement.” These choices help communicate the broad trends. However, some expressions are imprecise or unnatural for chart reporting: “seen adoption at a considerable pace,” “peaked at a much faster pace,” and “growth tenfolds” do not clearly describe the data. There are also noticeable spelling and word-form issues, including “Melboune” and “Inspite,” while “number of participation” is an awkward collocation. Prefer precise, conventional terms such as “increased,” “fluctuated,” and “fell,” and check spelling and collocations before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts both simple and more complex sentence forms, including contrastive clauses, but control is inconsistent. Agreement errors appear in “one of the activities have seen” and “the film club remains,” where the subject and verb do not match in number or tense. The sentence beginning “Whereas, martial arts activity remained stable…” is not properly joined to the preceding sentence, and the film-club sentence runs directly into “Inspite” without a space or clear punctuation. There are also awkward article and number patterns, such as “in the beginning of year 2000.” Use complete sentences, check singular/plural agreement, and punctuate comparisons so that each clause is grammatically connected.
