Student answer (Band 6.0)
The chart provides information about the number of people participating in different activities at a social centre in Melbourne, Australia from 2000 to 2020.
Overall, Film club had the highest number of participants throughout the whole period. Table tennis had a small number of participants at the beginning, but it had a sudden growth in participants after 2010 and at the end of the period it stands at the second position. A strong dip is found for the activity of amateur dramatics. The number of people engaging in Martial arts remained stable during the whole period. Even though, in 2000 and 2005, there are no participant apparently engaged in music, the number experienced a steady growth after that.
In 2000, film club had the most number of participants at around 65. That number remained mostly the some without any significant rise or decline in the next years, as they ended up with around 68 participants in the year of 2020. The number of people taking Martial arts was also remained homogenous, starting and ending with similar number of people of around 38. Amateur dramatics, although having around 25 participants at 2000, had a huge and continuing decline at 2005 and ended up with the lowest number of participants at 2020, with only around 5 people. Table tennis saw a huge rise in the year of 2010 and afterwards, and ended up with participants of just above 50. People, even though did not engage in music in 2000 and 2005, started to engage more as their particpants rose steadily.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main patterns accurately: film club remains the largest activity, table tennis rises markedly to become second, amateur dramatics declines to the lowest level, and musical performances grow after starting at zero. The overview is clear and the response includes relevant figures, such as film club at about 65 initially and table tennis ending above 50. This meets the task well, with some evidence of the more selective, well-focused reporting expected at a stronger level. However, a few details are imprecise: film club ends at about 66 rather than 68, and table tennis’s major acceleration is most evident from 2010 to 2020, not simply “in the year of 2010.” The musical-performance trend would also benefit from its final figure, around 18, and the martial-arts fluctuations are obscured by calling the series stable.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a sensible overall structure: an introduction, a summary of the main trends, and a paragraph with supporting details. The overview helps the reader understand the key comparisons before the figures are discussed. However, progression within the final paragraph is somewhat list-like, moving from one activity to another without consistently grouping related trends or making comparisons. Some linking is awkward or mechanical, as in “Even though” and “although” constructions that do not clearly connect the ideas. The final sentence repeats the point that musical participation increased without adding a figure or a clear comparison. To improve, organise details into clearer groups—for example, the consistently high or stable series together, then the sharply changing ones—and use references such as “this figure” only when their meaning is unmistakable.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing trends, including “steady growth,” “decline,” “remained stable,” and “participants.” These choices make the main patterns understandable, and some variation avoids excessive repetition. At times, however, word choice and collocation are imprecise: “a small number” understates table tennis’s initial figure, “a sudden growth” is less natural than a standard trend collocation, and “the same” is misspelled as “the some.” “Homogenous” is also not the natural word for a participant total that changes little. There are spelling slips in “particpants” and “particpating.” Aim for precise chart language and check spelling; terms such as “rose sharply,” “fluctuated,” and “remained broadly stable” would describe these patterns more naturally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “although” and “even though,” and the overall meaning remains clear. Some grammatical errors nevertheless recur. For example, “The number of people taking Martial arts was also remained” combines incompatible verb forms; use either “also remained” or “was also…” with an appropriate participle. In “as they ended up,” the pronoun does not clearly agree with the singular “number,” and “at 2000” should be “in 2000.” The sentence beginning “People, even though did not engage…” is incomplete in its clause structure, while “there are no participant” has an agreement error. Review tense consistency for past data, subject–verb agreement, and the construction of concessive clauses. More consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen control.
