Student answer (Band 6.5)

The line graph illustrates data about the numbers of people take part in different activities at one social culture centre in Melbourne, Australia between 2000 and 2020.

Overall, four activities out of five started in 2000 while one activity called musical performances started in 2005. In addition, number of participants in musical performances and table tennis activities grew over the period, whereas in amateur dramatics it slightly increased for just one year and then started declining. In film club and martial arts, people's interest showed fluctuation, kept increasing and decreasing over the period.

The musical performances activity started in 2005 and attracted lot of participants, number of participants grew from 0 to approximately 16 in between 2005 and 2020. The table tennis activity also showed same experience, in 2000 it showed slightly increase in number of participants and then remained constant till 2010 but after that it sharply increased and reached around 54 participants over next 10 years. Meanwhile, the amateur dramatics become unpopular among participants over the years, first it increased from around 26 to 29 participants slightly and then dramatically decreased from year 2005 to 2020, only 5 participants remained in this activity.

The martial arts activity showed fluctuation over the 20 years, from year 2000 to 2005, the number of participants decreased and then increased over next 5 years, then again it fell from year 2010 to 2015 and then remained constant till 2020. On the other hand, the film club activity first fell from approximately 64 to 62 in between 2000 and 2005 and then increased to around 68 participants in next 10 years.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You identify the main overall patterns and support them with relevant figures: table-tennis participation rises sharply to about 54, amateur dramatics falls to around 5–6, and film-club numbers remain high. The response also covers all five activities, so the key features are addressed. However, a few details are inaccurate or over-generalised. Musical performances began in 2010, not 2005, and rose from zero to about 18 by 2020; the overview’s claim that it started in 2005 conflicts with the later description. Film-club participation reaches about 66, rather than 68, and martial arts fluctuates rather than remaining constant at the end. More precise reporting of these details would make the overview and comparisons more consistently reliable.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear four-paragraph structure, moving from an introduction and overview to grouped details, and the activities are generally presented in a sensible order. Linking phrases such as “Overall,” “Meanwhile,” and “On the other hand” help signal relationships between trends. This gives the report a coherent overall progression. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear: “showed same experience” does not clearly explain the comparison, and the overview’s statement that musical performances started in 2005 is not reconciled with the later account. Grouping the two rising activities together and then contrasting them with the declining series could make the organisation more purposeful. Use references and transitions that clarify exactly which activity and period each point concerns.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of trend vocabulary, including “fluctuation,” “sharply increased,” “declining,” and “remained constant,” which allows the main movements to be understood. There are also attempts at more descriptive phrasing, such as “become unpopular.” However, several word choices and collocations are unnatural or imprecise, including “social culture centre,” “attracted lot of participants,” and “showed same experience.” Repetition of “activity” and “number of participants” also limits flexibility. Choose standard chart-reporting expressions and vary how you refer to participation and trends. More precise vocabulary would also help distinguish a steady rise from a fluctuation or a sharp increase, rather than relying on broad descriptions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses linked with “whereas,” “after that,” and “then,” and most of the trends remain understandable. Some grammatical errors occur, but they rarely prevent the reader from following the report. Examples include “the numbers of people take part,” where a relative clause or participle is needed, and “number of participants … grew,” which needs an article. There are also tense and agreement problems in “the amateur dramatics become unpopular” and “it slightly increased … and then started declining.” Review articles, verb forms, and subject–verb agreement, and check that each sentence has a clear grammatical structure. More accurate control of these patterns would strengthen the report while retaining its range of sentence forms.
