Student answer (Band 6.0)

This graph represents the number of students participating in various activities held at a social center in Melbourne over the period from 2000 to 2020.

Out of the five activities including film club, martial arts, amateur dramatics, table tennis and musical performances, a monumental increase was witnessed in the popularity of table tennis, starting at 18 participants in 2000 to plummeting to 50 by the end of 2020. Film club and martial arts were relatively steady during the period, while a sharp decline was noticed in amateur dramatics, falling from 27 participants in 2000 to 5 in 2020.

Musical performances took a slow start in 2000 with no participants, reaching to 15 by the end of 2020. A comparison between all five activities show that table tennis was the most popular, witnessing an unexpected surge between the years 2010 and 2020, jumping from 15 participants in 2010 to 50 in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify several important patterns, including the relative stability of the film club and martial arts, the decline in amateur dramatics, and the growth of table tennis. However, the response only partially reports the graph because some key figures and comparisons are inaccurate or unclear. Table tennis rises from about 16 to 54, not from 18 to 50, and it does not “plummet”; it increases. The later claim that it rose from 15 in 2010 also conflicts with the earlier account and the chart, which shows about 20. The overview would be stronger if it clearly stated that film club remained the largest activity overall and table tennis became the second largest by 2020. Include accurate, selective figures to support each main trend.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a clear opening and is divided into paragraphs, with a broadly sensible movement from the activities’ overall patterns to musical performances and a final comparison. Linking phrases such as “while” and “A comparison between all five activities” help connect ideas. However, the progression is weakened by repetition: table tennis’s rise is described twice, and the final comparison repeats the same trend rather than adding a distinct feature. The relationship between the two table-tennis figures is also confusing, since the account gives different starting values for 2010. Organise the body by grouping stable and declining activities separately from those that increased, and avoid repeating the same comparison. This would make the information easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

You use a varied vocabulary, including “relatively steady,” “sharp decline,” “surge,” and “witnessed,” and the meaning is generally clear. There is some awareness of formal reporting style, and the range is sufficient to describe changes and comparisons. However, a few choices are inaccurate or awkward for graph description. “Plummeting” means a sharp fall, so it contradicts the increase in table-tennis participation; “monumental increase” also overstates the change. “Took a slow start” and “reaching to 15” are not natural collocations in this context. Prefer precise, neutral language such as “rose steadily,” “increased sharply,” and “began at zero before reaching approximately 18.” This would improve precision and control of style.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

You use a range of sentence forms, including introductory phrases and clauses linked with “while,” and most sentences are easy to understand. The opening sentence and the description of amateur dramatics are grammatically controlled. Some errors remain, particularly with agreement and sentence construction. In “A comparison between all five activities show,” the singular subject requires “shows.” The phrase “reaching to 15” has an unnecessary preposition, and “starting at 18 participants in 2000 to plummeting to 50” does not form a parallel grammatical structure. A clearer version would be “Table-tennis participation rose from about 16 in 2000 to 54 in 2020.” Check subject–verb agreement and use parallel forms when describing changes; these adjustments would make the complex sentences more consistently accurate.
