Student answer (Band 6.5)

The given graph depicts the number of participants for different activities in a Melbourne social centre from 2000 to 2020

It can be seen from the graph that film club remains the activity with the most participants. Number of participants in Table Tennis and Musical performances saw an increase throughout the years with the former having a more rapid increase than the latter. On the other hand, Amateur dramatics ended up losing most of its participants until 2020. Martial Arts along with Film club remaind relatively stable with time.

Firstly, Film club is the most participated activity in the centre with approximately 75 members in 2000, faced a slight decline in 2010 and ended up with the same number as the starting point. Martial Arts saw a similar pattern where its inital and final values coincide at around 36.

Table Tennis and Musical performances did show increases in the number of participants with Table tennis starting at around 16 people in 2000, increased slightly to around 20 in 2010 then skyrocketted to around 50 participants in 2020.

Although Musical performances started late in 2005 with 0 people , by 2020 it gained approximately 15 participants.

Lastly, Amateur Dramatics started at around 25 participants in 2000 then peaked at 27 and then gradually dipped to less than 10 by 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main patterns clearly: the film club remains the largest activity, table tennis rises sharply, musical performances grow from zero, and amateur dramatics declines. The overview also notes that martial arts and the film club are relatively stable. Most reported figures are broadly consistent with the chart, but the film club is overstated at about 75 in 2000; it is closer to 64, and it finishes slightly higher, at about 66, rather than returning to its starting level. The account of musical performances also says they started in 2005, whereas the chart shows zero participants in both 2000 and 2005, with growth beginning by 2010. More precise reporting of these details, alongside the strong overview, would make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs grouping the stable activities, the rising activities, and amateur dramatics. This makes the main comparisons easy to follow. Linking phrases such as “On the other hand,” “Firstly,” and “Lastly” help signal the progression, although the sequence of “Firstly” and “Lastly” feels somewhat mechanical, and the final paragraph could be integrated more smoothly with the preceding discussion. Some information is repeated, particularly the increases in table tennis and musical performances in both the overview and body. Use more varied referencing and transitions, and ensure each paragraph adds detail rather than restating the same trend, to make cohesion more flexible.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for describing trends, including “slight decline,” “relatively stable,” “peaked,” and “gradually dipped.” These choices communicate the main movements effectively. However, some wording is informal or imprecise for an academic report: “skyrocketted” is an emphatic, non-neutral description, while “most participated activity” is an awkward collocation. There are also spelling errors in “remaind,” “inital,” and “skyrocketted,” which are noticeable even though the meaning remains clear. Aim for consistently neutral, precise language and check spelling carefully. More accurate terms for the film club’s small changes and table tennis’s substantial rise would strengthen the report’s descriptive range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, and most of the trends remain understandable. There are, however, some errors in sentence construction and verb forms. For example, “Film club is the most participated activity … with approximately 75 members in 2000, faced a slight decline” joins clauses awkwardly; it would be clearer to write that the figure “was about 64 in 2000, declined slightly by 2010, and then rose.” In “Table tennis … starting at around 16 people …, increased slightly,” the participle and main verb do not form a consistent structure. The phrase “Martial Arts saw a similar pattern where its initial and final values coincide” also shifts tense within a past-period report. Use consistent past tense and check that each sentence has a clear grammatical subject and verb.
