Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph illustrates the number of participants in five different activities at social centre in Melbourne from 2000 to 2020. Overall, it is apparent that film club and martial arts members remained same, while table tennis and musical participants increased significantly over the time period. In addition, the amateur dramatics member dropped and musical performance was started in 2005.

Firstly, the number of film club contestants was nearly 65 after that they were slightly fluctuated throughout the timeframe they were 60 in 2010 and then reached again approximately 65 in 2020. Moreover, the martial arts participants were nearly 38% in 2000 and then changes throughout the time period and reached just under 40 members in 2010 and reached approximately 39 in 2020. Furthermore, the contributors in amateur dramatics were just under 30 in 2000 and then icreased slightly to 30 participants in 2005 and then dropped down significantly to approximately 5 participants in 2020.

To begin with, the table tennis players were approximately 17 in 2000 and, after that slightly increased to 20 in 2005, and then players surged to nearly 55 in 2020. In contrast, musical performances started later as compared to other leisure activities and then performers increased steadily over the time period to nearly 15 in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover all five activities and identify the main contrasts: film-club numbers stay high, table tennis rises sharply, and amateur dramatics declines. The overview is relevant, and several figures are close to the chart, such as film-club participation at about 60 in 2010 and roughly 65 in 2020. Some details, however, are inaccurate or unclear: musical performances began in 2010, not 2005, and reached about 18 in 2020 rather than 15. Martial arts fluctuated around the mid-30s, not nearly 38% in 2000 or 39 in 2020. Also, saying film club and martial arts “remained same” overlooks their small fluctuations. More precise comparisons and accurate reporting of the later musical-performance trend would strengthen the response further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction and overview are followed by paragraphs describing the activities. The sequence is generally easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “Furthermore,” and “In contrast” help signal relationships. This gives the report coherent progression, though some transitions feel mechanical or do not clearly express the relationship between the data. For example, “To begin with” appears after a paragraph that has already begun describing the figures, and “In contrast” introduces musical performances without a clear contrast with the preceding table-tennis trend. Grouping the activities by their trends—stable, rising, or declining—and using more precise references between sentences would make the cohesion more flexible and the comparisons easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “fluctuated,” “increased significantly,” “dropped down,” and “surged,” so the main trends are usually understandable. There are also attempts at more formal reporting language. However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for describing a graph: “contestants” and “contributors” do not fit participants in these activities, “members remained same” is awkward, and “musical participants” is imprecise. “Nearly 38%” also uses a percentage where the chart reports a number of people. Spelling errors such as “icreased” further reduce accuracy. Choose standard chart vocabulary consistently, and check that each word describes either a participant count or a trend appropriately.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including sentences linked with “while,” “and then,” and “as compared to.” The overall meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors remain and several sentences are awkwardly constructed. For example, the opening needs an article in “at social centre,” while “film club and martial arts members remained same” is missing “the same” and has an unclear subject. In “they were slightly fluctuated,” the verb form is incorrect; use “they fluctuated slightly.” The long sentence about table tennis also needs cleaner punctuation and clause structure. Aim for accurate articles, verb forms, and sentence boundaries, while retaining a mix of sentence patterns.
