Student answer (Band 6.5)

The graph illustrates the amount of participants for different segments at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia in a span of twenty years from 2000 to 2020.

Overall, film club segments had the highest number of participants throughout the years. Musical perfomances had the lowest participants most of the time but the number increased gradually. Amateur dramatics and Table tennis show downward and upward trends in last ten years.

Film club members number had little increase, which was around 64 in 2000 and 68 in 2020. But it remained in the position of maximum participants. Martial art participants number flactuated between 35 to 38 throught the time period. Musical performance had no participants till 2005 but after that the participants number increased gradually and became 20 in 2020, which was higher than amateur dramatics.

Amateur dramatics participants increased from 25 to 30 in 2005 but after that the number of participants decreased sharply and ended with 10 members in 2020, which was the lowest participants number in that year. Table tennis participants increased gradually till 2010 and than the participants number dramatically rose to almost 55 in 2020. Table tennis had the second highest number of participants in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You provide a clear overview of the main patterns: film club remains the most popular activity, musical performances rise from zero, amateur dramatics declines, and table tennis grows strongly. You also make useful comparisons, such as table tennis becoming second highest by 2020. These features address the task well. Some details, however, are imprecise or inaccurate: film club ends at about 66 rather than 68, and musical performances reach about 18 rather than 20. The claim that musical performances had the fewest participants “most of the time” overlooks amateur dramatics’ lower figures in the later years. To strengthen the report, describe the key changes more precisely and distinguish the early and late rankings.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is organised into an introduction, an overview and two detail paragraphs, giving the information a coherent overall progression. The final paragraph groups amateur dramatics and table tennis effectively as contrasting trends, and linking phrases such as “after that” and “which was higher than” help show sequence and comparison. Some connections are repetitive or slightly mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “participants number” and “after that.” The overview also says the two activities show trends “in last ten years,” while the detail paragraphs cover changes across the full period, making the time framing less clear. Use more varied, precise transitions and organise details consistently by activity or by contrasting trend.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for describing a line graph, including “fluctuated,” “increased gradually,” “decreased sharply” and “second highest.” These choices communicate the main trends, and the meaning remains clear despite some inaccurate or awkward expressions. Phrases such as “amount of participants,” “film club segments” and “participants number” are not natural collocations; “number of participants” and “film club attendance” would be more appropriate. There are also spelling errors in “perfomances,” “flactuated” and “throught.” Aim for accurate, natural combinations rather than repeating the same noun phrase, and proofread spelling carefully. This would make the vocabulary more precise and controlled.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses with “which” and contrasts introduced by “but.” Most sentences are understandable, and errors rarely obscure the intended trends. Some grammatical patterns are not well controlled, however. For example, “Amateur dramatics and Table tennis show” shifts into the present tense while the report describes past data; “in a span of twenty years” is an awkward prepositional construction; and “Table tennis participants increased gradually till 2010 and than…” contains a faulty sequence. Articles and number patterns also need attention in phrases such as “the lowest participants number.” Keep the past tense consistent and check sentence structure, articles and singular/plural forms.
