Student answer (Band 7.0)
The line graph compares of the number of people participating in six different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia between 2000 and 2020.
Overall, film club was the most popular activity throughout the period. Table tennis, on the other hand, experienced a substanial increased throughout the 20-year period, while amateur dramatics was the only activity that witness a significant downward trend.
Looking on the data, film club participants fluctuated slightly but remained high, starting at roughly 64 participants in 2000 and ending at a peak of nearly 66 in 2020. Table tennis started as one of the least popular in 2000 at only around 15 participants and increased exponentially after 2010 to reach around 54 by the end of the period. Musical performances was only introduced in 2005, starting at 0 participants and climbing to around 15 in 2020.
In contrast, the number of participants for martial arts remained relatively stable, howvering around 35 participants over the two decades despite minor fluctuations. Meanwhile, amateur dramatics showed an initial marginal rise to about 28 participants in 2005, but subsequently dropped over the 15 years, decreasing to a low of roughly 7 participants by 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response selects the main patterns and gives a clear overview: film club remains the most popular, table tennis rises markedly, and amateur dramatics declines. Most figures are accurately reported, including film club’s approximate starting and ending levels and table tennis reaching about 54. The account also compares the steadier martial arts figures with the changing series. One factual inaccuracy is that musical performances were not introduced in 2005: the chart shows zero participants in both 2000 and 2005, with participation beginning by 2010. The description of table tennis as increasing “exponentially” also overstates the pattern, since its rise is not consistently exponential. More precise wording and a closer check of the musical-performance timeline would strengthen an otherwise well-selected summary.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised effectively into an introduction, an overview and two detail paragraphs. The overview identifies the most important contrasts, and the body moves from film club and rising series to the more stable and declining activities. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “On the other hand,” and “In contrast” help signal these relationships, while “Meanwhile” introduces the final trend clearly. The progression is easy to follow, although the grouping could be made more systematic: the second detail paragraph combines martial arts and amateur dramatics, while musical performances is grouped with film club and table tennis despite having a different starting pattern. A clearer grouping by stable, rising and falling trends would make the organisation even more controlled.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
There is a good range of trend vocabulary, including “fluctuated slightly,” “relatively stable,” “marginal rise,” and “downward trend,” which allows the writer to describe several patterns without excessive repetition. Some less common wording is attempted, but a few choices are inaccurate or misspelled: “substanial increased” is not a natural phrase, “increased exponentially” overstates the table-tennis trend, and “howvering” is misspelled. “Witness a significant downward trend” is also less natural than a direct description of the figures. These slips do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision and control. Choosing accurate collocations and checking spelling would help the vocabulary sound more fluent and appropriately formal.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex structures, including contrast clauses with “while” and “but,” and the sentence describing amateur dramatics effectively combines an initial rise with its later decline. Meaning remains clear throughout. However, some grammatical errors persist. The opening phrase “compares of the number” has an unnecessary preposition, and “Musical performances was” has a subject–verb agreement error. In “a substantial increased,” the form after the article is incorrect; the intended construction is “a substantial increase.” The overview also shifts to “was the only activity that witness,” where the verb form should agree with the past-tense context. More consistent checking of verb forms, agreement and sentence patterns would improve accuracy while preserving the range already attempted.
