The graph below gives information on the numbers of participants for different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia for the period 2000 to 2020.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The line graph compares the number participating for six different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia between 2000 and 2020.
Overall, film club was consistently the most popular activity throughout the 20-year period. While table tennis experienced a substantial increase, whereas amateur dramatics was the only activity that showed a mark decline throughout the entire year.
Looking at the data, film club participants fluctuated slightly but remained high, starting at roughly 64 participants in 2000 and ending at a peak of around 66 in 2020. Table tennis started as one of the least popular among the activities with only about 16 participants, but increased exponentially after 2010 to reach 54 participants by the end of the period. Musical performances were only introduced in 2005, starting at 0 participants and climbing to around 15 participants in 2020.
In contrast, the number of people doing martial arts remained relatively stable, hovering around 35 participants over the two decades despite minor fluctuations. Meanwhile, amateur dramatics showed an initial marginal rise to about 28 participants, but subsequently decreased over the next 15 years, dropping to a low of roughly 7 participants by 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response selects the main patterns and supports them with relevant figures: film club remains highest, table tennis rises sharply after 2010, and amateur dramatics falls to about 6 by 2020. The overview is clear, and the comparisons between the stable martial arts figures and the changing activities are useful. A few details are inaccurate or overgeneralised: musical performances were already recorded at zero in 2000, so they were not “introduced in 2005”; and amateur dramatics did not decline throughout the whole period, since it rose slightly from 26 to 28 between 2000 and 2005. Also, “exponentially” overstates the table-tennis trend. More precise descriptions of these stages would strengthen an otherwise well-selected summary.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised effectively into an introduction, an overview and two detail paragraphs. The progression from the overall ranking to specific trends is easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “In contrast” and “Meanwhile” help distinguish the series. However, the overview contains the awkward pairing “While … whereas,” which makes the relationship between the two trends less clear, and “throughout the entire year” is an imprecise reference to the period. The detail paragraphs group the activities sensibly, but the final paragraph could connect its comparisons more smoothly. Overall, the structure is clear and cohesive; more careful control of a few transitions and references would make the flow more consistently natural.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
There is a useful range of trend vocabulary, including “fluctuated slightly,” “remained relatively stable,” “substantial increase” and “hovering around,” which allows the writer to describe different patterns rather than repeat basic verbs. Some choices are not sufficiently precise or natural for the data: “exponentially” implies a particular mathematical growth pattern, while “mark decline” is an incorrect form and “throughout the entire year” does not suit a 20-year period. “Starting at 0 participants” is understandable, though “recorded no participants” would be more idiomatic. These occasional collocation and word-form problems do not obscure the meaning, but more exact vocabulary would improve the precision and flexibility of the description.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response uses a range of sentence forms, including complex contrasts such as “While table tennis experienced a substantial increase…” and “despite minor fluctuations.” Most sentences communicate the data clearly, and the past-tense reporting is generally controlled. However, there are some noticeable structural errors. The overview combines “While” with “whereas” in the same construction, creating a faulty contrast, and “amateur dramatics was the only activity that showed a mark decline throughout the entire year” contains an awkwardly formed clause. The phrase “starting at 0 participants and climbing” also leaves the subject of the participial phrase unclear. Revising these constructions and checking punctuation would help the writer retain varied sentence structures while achieving more consistent accuracy.
