Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph illustrates the number of people participating in different activities at a social centre in Melbourne, Australia between 2000 and 2020.

Overall, it is clear that the largest proportion of people were found participating in the film club, while the number of people taking part in martial art remained stable throughout the period. In addition, the number people taking part in table tennis comes right after the the film club participants by the end of the period, whereas amature dramatic had the lowest number of participants at the end of the period. Musical performances had a rise later in the period.

At the beginning of the period, there were no records of people participating in musical performances. It then rose to around 10 in 2005 and gradually showed a slight increase over the years, whereas around 70 people participated in the film club, these records remained stable between 2005 and 2020.

Meanwhile, people participated in table tennis in the begininng of the year were around 10, that rose dramatically to around 50 in 2020. The amature dramatics had around 20 participants in the begnining that dropped sharply at the end of the period.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main overall pattern: the film club remains the most popular activity, table tennis rises substantially, and amateur dramatics declines to the lowest level. These are relevant features, and you include an overview as well as some supporting details. However, several figures and trends are inaccurate: musical performances begin at zero and reach about 12 by 2010, not around 10 in 2005; film-club participation is in the low-to-mid 60s, rather than around 70; and table tennis starts at about 16, not 10. The claim that martial arts remained stable is broadly reasonable, but the description of musical performances as rising “later” is not developed with accurate stages. More precise reporting of key values and changes would make the summary clearer and more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs describing selected activities. This gives the reader a coherent overall route through the information. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “In addition,” and “Meanwhile” help signal relationships between points. However, the grouping of details is not always clear: the third paragraph combines musical performances and the film club, while the final paragraph shifts to table tennis and amateur dramatics without a clear comparison. Some links are also awkward or repetitive, such as “whereas” joining trends that are not directly contrasted. Organise the body around clearer groups—for example, stable or fluctuating activities versus those with strong rises or falls—and use references that make each comparison explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “participating,” “remained stable,” “gradually,” “dramatically,” and “dropped sharply.” These choices help describe changes and comparisons. However, some word choices and collocations are imprecise, including “largest proportion” when the graph shows participant numbers, and “comes right after the the film club participants,” which is unclear. There are also spelling errors in “amature,” “begininng,” and “begnining,” and the activity name “amateur dramatics” is not consistently reproduced accurately. Aim for precise, natural phrases such as “had the highest number of participants” and “ranked second by 2020.” Careful proofreading of activity labels and spelling would improve control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use both simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses with “while,” “whereas,” and “that,” and most of the meaning remains understandable. Some grammatical errors occur, but they rarely prevent the reader from following the main points. For example, “the number people taking part” is missing “of,” and “people participated in table tennis in the beginning of the year were around 10” has an unclear sentence structure. In “the number of people taking part in martial art remained stable,” the singular activity label also needs a more natural grammatical form. Review noun phrases and clause construction, and make sure each sentence has a clear subject and verb. More consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen the response.
