Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the five activities and report several important patterns, including film club remaining high, amateur dramatics declining, and table tennis rising sharply to about 54 participants by 2020. However, the overview is not consistently accurate: saying film club had the “Highest number” overlooks that table tennis rose substantially, and “In 2020 table tennis activity was at highest” is unclear about whether this means its own peak or the highest activity overall. Musical performances were at zero in both 2000 and 2005, not simply “at lowest in 2005.” Martial arts’ broadly stable, fluctuating pattern is mentioned only briefly. Select the main comparisons more precisely and distinguish each activity’s peak from the overall highest figure.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction and overview to selected details and a concluding sentence. Linking expressions such as “Furthermore,” “On the other hand,” and “Meanwhile” show an attempt to connect ideas. However, progression is uneven: the overview repeats the introduction’s list of activities, while the final sentence restates earlier points rather than adding a clear comparison. Some links do not accurately signal the relationship between ideas, and the sentence about musical performances and table tennis combines two separate trends, making the reference to “other activities” unclear. Organise the body around contrasting trends—for example, declining/stable activities versus rising ones—and use clearer references and transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant task vocabulary, including “fluctuation,” “dramatic increase,” “participants,” and “minor fluctuations,” which helps describe changes over time. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are unnatural or imprecise, such as “candidates performing various activities,” “followed the decline,” and “describe their peaked.” “Players” is also less suitable as a general label for participants across all activities. These choices sometimes make the intended comparison difficult to understand. Aim for precise chart language and natural collocations, such as “participants in,” “declined steadily,” “rose sharply,” and “reached a peak.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “although” and “while.” However, errors are frequent enough to affect clarity. For example, “five different types of activities that was” has an agreement error, and “musical performances were at lowest … but is gradually increased” shifts tense and uses an incorrect verb form. Several sentences lack necessary articles or have unclear construction, as in “Highest number of participants involved in film club.” Punctuation and spacing are also inconsistent, particularly around commas and sentence boundaries. Practise accurate past-tense reporting and build complete sentences with clear subjects and verbs before adding more complex clauses.
