Student answer (Band 6.0)

The provided line chart illustrates the amount of people participating in 5 distinct activities Film club, Martial arts, Amateur dramatics, Table tennis, and Musical performances at one social centre in Melbourne over a span of 15 years from 2000 to 2020.

Overall, film club ranked the first among all five activities, followed by table tennis, while amateur dramatics recrorded a negligible figure to register the lowest.

To begin with, in 2000, film club recorded around 65 and remained almost the same volume over the whole period, despite a slight increase by the end of the given period to reach roughly 70. After which, martial arts recorded around 38 to secure the second place, over the next decade it experienced fluctuation to end at roughly the same level by the end of the given period. Amateur dramatics registered just below 30, subsquently it followed a dramatic decline to reach the lowest by the end of the period.

Furthermore, table tennis recorded lower figure at the begining at roughly 16, however if witnessed a significant increase to achieve around 55 in 2020 ranking the second-highest activity, musical performances increased gradually to register around 20 in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main overall pattern: film club remains the most popular activity, table tennis rises strongly to become second, and amateur dramatics declines to the lowest level. You also cover all five activities and include relevant figures, such as table tennis rising from about 16 to 55 and musical performances reaching around 20. This gives the response a clear, relevant summary. However, some details are imprecise: film club ends at about 66, not 70, and martial arts fluctuates around the mid-30s rather than clearly securing second place. The overview also calls amateur dramatics’ initial figure “negligible,” although it starts at about 26. More precise comparisons and a clearer account of the musical performances’ start in 2000 would strengthen the report.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview, and two detail paragraphs. The grouping of film club, martial arts and amateur dramatics before discussing table tennis and musical performances is understandable, and sequencing phrases such as “To begin with” and “Furthermore” help guide the reader. However, some links are mechanical or unclear. “After which” does not connect smoothly to the preceding sentence, and the long sentence beginning “After which, martial arts…” combines several points without clear boundaries. The overview’s ranking of table tennis also needs to be distinguished as its position at the end of the period, rather than across the whole chart. Clearer sentence divisions and more precise referencing would make the progression easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of chart vocabulary, including “fluctuation,” “dramatic decline,” “significant increase,” and “gradually,” which helps describe changes rather than merely list figures. The meaning is generally clear, but some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “amount of people” is better expressed as “number of participants,” and “ranked the first” is not idiomatic. “Negligible figure” overstates the low point for amateur dramatics, while “same volume” is not a natural way to describe participant numbers. There are also spelling errors, including “recrorded,” “subsquently,” and “begining.” More precise, natural collocations and careful proofreading would improve control of vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex structures, including clauses with “despite,” “however,” and “to reach,” and the main trends remain understandable. Some sentences are grammatically controlled, such as the opening description of the chart. However, several sentence structures need attention. “After which, martial arts recorded…” is an incomplete or awkwardly attached clause, and “however if witnessed” lacks a clear grammatical subject and verb. The sentence about martial arts also runs together several ideas, while punctuation around “however” is not consistently managed. There are occasional issues with articles and number expressions, as in “recorded lower figure.” Revising these constructions into shorter, complete sentences would improve accuracy while retaining variety.
